Speakers - Boston Acoustics T930

My new neighbor up the road was over a few weeks ago.

Retired old guy, dabbling in guitar with a beginner Ibanez.

Came to the Compound to look over my guitars.

Liked my stereo and my home-built speakers.

I was detailing the trials and tribulations of going cheap, buying used components and doing mods.

Adcom amp and preamp, drives my speakers clean and HARD.

Told him how I ordered the components to build the speakers.

Melted the crossover in one when I got the 250 watt amp.

Had the crossovers repaired and all has been great since.

Anyhow, he has these old speakers he's kept in the closet for years - almost as long as George Michael was...

[flapper]

(Had to throw that in there for Corrosion of Conformity - he's a HUGE George Michael fan!)

Wanted me to try 'em out, said he didn't really need 'em, would make me a SMOKIN' deal yet to be determined.

We carried 'em in and I simply sat them in the corner until I had time to hook 'em up.

Did some research, found that they are 20 year old Boston Acoustics T930s.

Rated at 150 watts, and BA stuff has never really impressed me when driven HARD.

So the other day I hook 'em up and one tweeter refuses to work at all.

Pushed lightly on the voice coil cover and it started to hiss and pop while attempting to play.

Let go - it quit again.

Told the owner what I found - he said to just throw 'em away.

What?

Hell, I oughta be able to find components that will work somewhere!

Unhooked 'em and put them in the corner of my office until I could research them this morning.

Turns out BA just sold the LAST PAIR OF TWEETERS IN THE WORLD last week.

No sh!t.

They sent me to United Radio - their authorized repair facility.

No help there either, and no other tweeter in the whole wide world will work.

Then when I was looking at them more closely for product info, I find the foam edge torn on one woofer.

Jeez...

[blink]

Okay.

Like I said, they were free - and maybe not worth it...

Anybody have a lead on T930 parts?

At some point I suppose I could modify the front of the enclosures to accept different speakers.

There's a grill to sorta hide it, but I hate to butcher nice cabinets.

Hate to just throw them away....

It just occurred to me...

Some of the pics and videos Blackie has posted show that he has a fondness for "stuff" and whatnot.

Hey Blackie, next time you're in the neighborhood (middle of the Sonoran Desert) let me know.

I'll make you a SMOKIN' DEAL on a set of speakers!

[woot]
