Review - Epiphone Slash Appetite for Destruction Les Paul

Let me preface this by saying my #1 is a PRS Sunburst 22 and my #2 is a Gibson USA Ace Frehley Signature LP. It has been many years since I've owned an Epiphone.

Having said that I recently was seduced by the new Epi Slash AFD LP and I am pleasantly surprised! I am most suprised by the quality and tone of Epi's latest Slash model. Without getting too long winded there are a few things that jumped out to me about this model:

1. Resonance - The body rings acoustically very well. The wood and neck to body joint feel very solid. Acoustically the tone is bright and snappy.

2. New Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro Slash pickups are clearer and slightly higher output than the normal ALII's I've had. They have a clear warm tone and the neck pickup never gets muddy.

3. For an Epiphone this guitar has excellent sustain, harmonics and warmth. The majority of Epi's I've owned had that "Blanket over the Amp" muddiness regardless of the type of pickup. For whatever reason this new AFD is much improved.

Very nice!

I agree entirely. I have a 2002 Epiphone Les Paul Custom which is great, but this guitar has an entirely different feel. Fantastic resonance and I like the slightly chunkier neck.

I have one small issue, my one has a slight "clouding" with the finish near the toggle switch...looks like it was possibly carved a bit deeply there and extra lacquer was used to make up the difference?! I took a photo but it is kind of hard to see, I only had an iphone. What do you guys think?? Other than that it looks great!!

I can't agree more. The slash afd is a very nice guitar. I normally do not buy in on the signature models, but I find the 2 i have are really great guitars (newly aquired slash afd and the ibjl casino in my avatar).
