29Tudor
I know nothing about guitar electronics. Is this mod a treble bleeder? Looks like some other wires were swapped around. The guitar is an Austin semi-LP Custom with a very nice tone.
Whitmore Willy
....and the answer is..... The spaghetti mod! (Kidding!) Judging from the wires on the bridge side I would guess that it is modern dependent. What confuses me is the blob of solder on the back of the tone pot. Other than that it looks quite the same as most production wiring. I see the caps but no sign of resistors that would be on a treble bleed. The caps are grounded from the center leg of the tone pot to the back of the pot. A green shielded wire is running from the outside leg of the tone pot to the outside leg of the volume pot. The shielding from the green wire is soldered to the back of the volume and tone pots. What looks to be a blue pickup wire is going to the outside leg of the volume pot where the green wire is. Easy conformation: If the switch is in the center position, does completely turning off one volume control shut down the other?...or... Are the volumes 100% completely independent of each other in the center position? Test and report back. Willy
29Tudor
Willy-Thanks for the reply. Either volume pot shuts them both down with the selector in the middle position, the neck tone pot controls the tone on both pups. Is this a one knob control option? Why the two caps? My 93 Epi Custom has only one, and the Austin sounds better. I like my guitars with one knob controls, makes it simple. I'm just a couch player so the usual set up probably makes more sense to a real musician.
Whitmore Willy
OK...an other question. Set your selector switch to neck pickup. Now, set your switch to bridge pickup. (we are not talking center position any longer) Are you saying that the same tone knob controls the tone in both positions? If that is the case then it may have been modded to a single master tone. Did you get the guitar used? It is a normal enough mod for someone that likes that kind of setup. Whoever did it may have just left the rest of the parts in the guitar. I really can't make it out from a photo. Still looks modern dependent to me. As to your Epi Custom only having one cap....that would be a mystery to me if it is stock. As to the "better sound" it may be no more than the difference in the type of pickups. The main thing is that you are happy with what you have. bigneil
There are loads of variations on ways to wire up a 2 pickup guitar with 2 volumes and 2 tone controls. Check out Animal Farms DIY thread, it is a sticky thread in the Epi' lounge. Scroll about half way down for some great info on wiring diagrams....Plus there is loads of other cool stuff there too <_< here is my link.... 29Tudor
All controls work as they should when the bridge or the neck p/u is selected. It does have 2 caps, my mistake. I did get it used with no signs of ever being played. I'm very happy with both guitars, thinking about a pup replacement in the epi, maybe PAFs. Thanks for the responses and the link. Then it is Modern Dependent. If you have a chance, take some time and check out the info in Bigneil's link. Lot's of good wiring diagrams to be found there. Fiddling with pickups is always fun too. Have you ever tried any GFS? Willy
