Dot or Riviera ?

Hi guys,

ihave bought three months ago a Casino 1961 Ann. and i´am really happy with it, it´s one of the best guitar i have ever had (i almost prefer it to my Rick360).

Now here the problem (or maybe my dilemma) i´m also owner of Standard MIC Casino and in the last time i have started to think to sell it, because i want to buy also a semi-hollow with humbucker. I´m thinking about a Dot (because it´s really good and a great value for the money), but i have also found an Epiphone Riviera ltd. edition with mini-humbucker and frequensator that cost not so much more. Now i know that this forum if full of people with real passion for guitar as well as a deep knowledge.

Could you please help with this hard decision, and tell about pro and cons about these two options. I have already owned a Dot (and i was stupid enough to sell it, it was one with the Gibson truss-rod cover)but i have never owned a Riviera.

I play most 60´s stuff, r´n´b´ and beatles stuff.

Thank you in advance.

P.s. I´m not so used anymore to write in English (i´m italian and i live in Berlin), so I hope that I haven't done too many mistakes in my sentences.

For me the Riviera with minis would be an incredibly cool guitar, and definately the one I'd go for, but if you're looking for a traditional 335 you might find the mini humbuckers aren't exactly what you're looking for.

If you can try both then your solution is simple: play them and choose the one that feels best to you. If not, it's a more difficult choice. Having said that, although the Riviera might be a riskier choice due to the pickup type, it's a pretty desirable guitar in that configuration and I would imagine it would be a fairly easy guitar to sell on if you bought it but found you didn't get on with it.

I own both and I will conclusively say if you can find a Riviera with mini-hums, that's what you want to own and play! And that takes nothing away from the Dot or even the Casinos, they are all must owns in their own right, and I wouldn't give them up for nothing. But AIMM Riviera has quickly become my #1 guitar. And that's a big accomplishment considering the field of guitars of own now or have owned in the past.

Here's my recently acquired (new old stock, i.e. found treasure!) 2009 AIMM LE Custom Shop Riviera in Cherry:

What mud guy said. Dots are readily available, but Rivieras with mini-hums don't turn up too often, so I'd say jump on it while you can. You'll have many other opportunities to get a Dot at a good price.

Thank you very much guys, for the fast answer and the help.

Unfortunately the Riviera and also really strangely seems to be vanished in just a couple of hours [crying]

It seems that takes to long to come to a decision, well in this case my own fault. Maybe i can wait and search online or maybe i can just buy a dot and pick up a Riviera the next time that one will come up on the net.

It's all about timing and looking in the right place at the right moment that counts. And if you pause when you find it, that usually gives yield to someone else that buys it out from under you. That's why I rarely hesitate in acquiring an item that I am able to when I run across something hard to find.

Good luck with your search and purchase!
