1964 sg special - reverse pickup selector switch

I recently bought a 1964 sg special, an amazing guitar but with a very weird quirk.

When the pickup selector switch is down (treble) it selects the neck pickup, and when it's up (rhythm) it selects the bridge pickup!

From what I can tell all of the electronics are original, or at least they look that way (but I'm no expert). And nothing looks out of the ordinary or weird.

Has anyone ever encountered this before? Any ideas what the reason could be? It's not really a problem of course, although it does take some getting used to.
