Dr. Thump
Greetings all, I bought a Gibson bass from a local Long & McQuade's music store and was wondering if I could find any info on it, since I don't think I've seen anything like it before. This is what it looks like: And the serial number is 02683384. I tried the serial number search on the site, but wasn't quite able to figure it out. Can anyone provide any details about this instrument?
rd_artist
You have a Les Paul Standard bass created on the 268th day of 2003, mahogany body with a maple cap, long scale. passive electronics with the T-bird pickups it's an overall excellent bass but sadly it is discontiued. raven1844
Whats the tone of these LP Standard basses like? I've been thinking of adding one to my arsenal - but havent found one locally to be able to try it out first. I play T-birds mostly - anyone able to give a comparison? clance
Thats a nice one! I've never seen one in that colour before. When you got it was it missing the switch tip?
Dr. Thump
It sounds good...nice meaty tone with lots of punch. However, I've since put darkstar pickups in them and it sounds amazing.
raven1844
It looks really cool! Most of the ones I've seen are the HCS or Honey Burst finish. Whats your grain pattern like? And is the dark part of the burst black sprayed onto an amber finish?
Dr. Thump
I really couldn't tell you, although I did get some newer, more close up pictures that might tell you I suppose...of course, keep in mind these have the new pickups in them now:
raven1844
Wow - looks awesome! Is it full sized (34" scale)? The new pups make it look a bit smaller - more like a Starfire
Dr. Thump
It's definitely full scale unlike some of the EB series. The pickups are indeed huge, but I imagine that's why they can grab such a wide frequency range. And yes, the Guild Starfire basses are more or less where darkstar pickups originated. raven1844
Thanks for the link - I have a De Armond Starfire I picked up a few years ago and although it sounds pretty good for a MIK bass, I bet those pickups would really light it up
rd_artist
OMG when I saw the new pictures with the Darkstar pickups, I almost choked! I understand that they may sound great, but I am a purist and the look wrong on the Les Paul IMO. besides I believe they were supposed to be drop in replacements for the Big EB-0 EB-3 basses. Dr. Thump
I actually picked the pickups before picking the bass...when I was deciding what instrument to put the darkstars in, it seemed to me that a big, resonant chunk of mahogany would do just the trick. Don't get me wrong, the stock pickups were great, but now they have more punch than Mike Tyson and richness to spare. I know you're just stating your opinion but really any make & model could bring one to be a purist...but then there would never be a custom anything. lpdeluxe
My long-time playing partner has one, which he plugs into a Music Man HD-130 bass head and a Hartke 410XL cab. It has so much personality and punch it's ridiculous (speaking as a P bass man, myself). Cool bass.
rd_artist
did you have to do any routing to install the pickups?
Robot Bass
They used to make a version of these in the early 70s
Dr. Thump
did you have to do any routing to install the pickups? Me? No. The technician I hired? Yes He had a heck of time, since the bass has an arched top, instead of a flat top like...well, like just about every bass out there. So getting the pickup mounts level and all really took some effort. He did a pretty snazzy job overall, I must say, and was certainly worth it.
