The last string bender
I got an old Gibson SG guitar and I would like to know the exact model, year and other info regarding this guitar... The serial number is 187374 and impressed at the back of the head stock with "made in usa" at the bottom of it...
cjsinla
Try looking it up on the "guitar dater" sites. Judging by the square inlays, it was probably a Norlin era SG. Does it have the neck volute?
cjsinla
According to guitardaterproject.org, Your guitar was made at the Kalamazoo or Nashville Plant , USA approximately in: 1970, 1971 or 1972
L5Larry
Oh, that really narrows it down! (guitar dater strikes again) Get off the internet and go to the library (or a BOOK STORE, remember them?). There are tons of legitimately published books on the history of Gibson guitars and their ID. Go BUY one!
JimR56
Hello, the Nashville plant hadn't opened yet in 1970-72. Do what Larry suggests, and stop promoting that site. You can always go here, if you want an online source that's reasonably accurate: http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html

The guitar looks like a Norlin era SG and that's all I know. If you could be of more help to this person, maybe you should help them According to your site: 1969-1975: 6 digit peghead stamped serial number, MADE IN USA stamped below. JimR56
Well, I guess I helped by pointing out that it couldn't have been made in Nashville during those years, right? Beyond that, there are cases where Gibson's numbering system was too flawed to allow for accurate dating using serial numbers. The point is, that "guitar dater project" website is notorious for spreading bogus information. Larry and I and other regulars here get tired of seeing the bogus info being spread around. Searcy
I believe it's a 73 or 74 SG Standard. Frank Zappa played one of those. The best way to confirm the date would be by reading the date codes on the back of the pots.

That sounds about right, based on Gibson catalogs of the period: The evolution of the 70's SG Standard: http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1970_solid_body_3.php http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1972_solid_body_4.php http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1973_solidbody_1.php http://www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1975_solidbody_9.php

The last string bender
Thank you very much for those wonderful information. I look at the original pots and the year is 1974. Based on the catalog that Mr. JimR56... it is a Gibson SG Standard. O guess it would be safe enough to say that my guitar is a Gibson 1974 SG Standard.
