  1. It’s amazing the things that can be done.  It’s “brave, new world.”  This technology is in its infancy.  Kind of scary to think of what some a-holes will be able to do with it———Won’t be long before people are having their lives ruined because an AI version of them appears in a crime.

  2. I know Gibsons are expensive, but prices are increasing on everything.  Beyond that, I like Gibsons, and, if Gibson sold a  $500 new guitar I’d probably wonder what shortcuts and concessions did they make.  If someone wants or can only afford a low-mid range guitar, Yamaha ain’t bad at all.

  3. Damn you,  motorcitychick…..lol….  Just when I’m content with my current stable, you bring another thoroughbred to my attention.  We just sold our old house (moved into a bigger one) for more than expected and my boss of 53 years has given me permission to buy something nice for myself.  I realize we “can’t take it with us” when we go, but we can sure-as-hell have fun with it while we’re here. ……I have always been drawn to the bigger guitars and I suspect I’ll be watching for this guitar.  Thanks for the inspiration.

  4. Really sorry to hear this.  Kind of suspected it was coming.   I really enjoy a lot of his music.  He was a good man, a patriot, a good father, a good human.  One of those guys like Dylan, Cash, Prine….Different and cool without having to act “cool.”

What's the worst thing about having sex with your grandmother?

Banging your head on the coffin lid.

Sick, but funny!  I can laugh at most anything, including myself.

  6. God, good job, David!  You and Ben are killin’ me with these songs about “real” people.  It’s great to dig-out an old song you wern’t quite satisfied with and turn it into a winner.  Keep’ em coming!  You guys are inspiring me.

  7. Superb, Ben!  I love this kind of stuff!  Memories of my two grandfathers…..Each carried a pocketknife and could use it for what seemed countless of reasons….and as you say, it was magical.  Thanks for the memories…..and I envy your playing abilities.

Don't know why, but this reminded me of the story about the fella who was a recent recruit to the French Foreign Legion.

Only men there....after a couple of weeks he craved some female attention..... went to the Captain and explained his problem.   Captain said,  "the guys all use the mule out there".....

Fella was disgusted with that prospect and left.   After another month or so, he told the Captain he needed to "use" the mule..... he got a stool, and got behind the mule.

After a while the Captain walked out to see what was going on....and spied the new recruit and said, "Most of the guys just ride her into town!

    Good one.

  9. I started listening to this guy again.  He’s written a lot about growing-up in a small Iowa town.   He has his own guitar style and way of using words, kind of like Prine.  I find my self identifying with much of his folksy/americana songs.  Definitely worth a listen if you’re into the genres.

Thanks. And yeah, I was never able to run fast enough….

For the sake of background, here is the song as it was originally written. I’m ambivalent about the version below. It is longer, but I wonder if the additional lines add anything to the story, other to prove to the listener I know Wabash semi-trailers come in lengths of 48 feet and 52 feet. I’m open to hearing others’ thoughts re: shorter-vs.-longer.

Christmas Eve Blues © 2023 by David Hanners

    It’s 11:42 on a lonely Christmas Eve

Night sky sparkles like eyes you once believed

Stretch of Texas highway, I'm all by myself

Save for a conscience that's guilty as hell

Haul my woes behind me like a 48-foot Wabash

Hoping over the horizon I’ll find something that’ll last

    (Chorus)

    I'm out here on I-10

With the ghost of Christmas past

When you're running from your troubles

You can never run too fast

Through the static comes a preacher from Plaster City, California

It's like he's talkin' just to me; Says, "Boy, thought I’d warn ya:

“Wide is the road that leads to sin

Few who knock on Heaven’s door are worthy to enter in

And the drunkard’s hand is like a proverb in the mouth of fools

But the lonely and afflicted can lay down and be made new”

    (chorus)

I think of Mary and Joseph out on the road

They were the lucky ones ‘cause they knew where they were goin’

We're all just pilgrims on a highway, searchin' for direction

Tryin' to fill the empty miles between birth and resurrection

All I ask of mercy is bear me on your snowy wings

I am a lowly sinner too

I love this song.  Lots of great lines.  I tend to agree with your ambivalence about the 48ft Wabash.  As a retired truck driver, I understand your reference to a 48ft., but some folks likely know very little about trailers and not get the link…….Either way, this is good stuff.

Hah !  May 28th  !    But, apparently Digger is taking home the gold. Medal. Plated.  Made Offshore.

I remember the strange feeling - before I retired,  being in meetings and looking around and realizing I was always the oldest person in the room.  But, suddenly, I was the youngest person at the Shuffleboard tournaments !

Damn, I feel like a bridesmaid, but never a bride (that’s only on days  that I feel like being a woman)…..I wouldn’t be surprised if Digger saw Washington crossing the Delaware.
