Yep, the 70s and 80s can keep their heavy!

Everyone got busted woofer valves from carrying too much.

A guy in a band I joined owned a concert PA for pub circuit hire, double four way with all Phase Linear etc. and we rehearsed through some of it every week for a dreamy period there. Then we had to do gigs and.......yikes, carry it all. Felt like I was playing my guitar with my elbows after that! Then we got a roadie that could carry most of it on his shoulders! Except he was a nutcase....and on it goes.....

    AER rules! Little mixer rules!

Taking just the Maton and plugging in someone else’s PA, even better!

Here is a video from last year of the Standard vs the 50s Original at Acoustic Letter.....if you have played both, which do you prefer?

    Anybody own both?

(I use to have a J45 Standard that I bought in 2010, long gone...but a couple of years ago I bought a pawn shop 2002 Gibson J50, which to me is more like the 50s Original J45 above - Kluson style tuners, bone nut and saddle, chunkier neck..... when I bought it, I thought it looked like a 1956 I saw on the net. Big bonus for me is the guitar is 20 years old and well and truly broken in! Maybe it has been relic'd, but recently my guitar tech gave it a setup and an Anthem pickup and it is...superb!)

  3. FYI: The guy that made the original AER 60 compact, pictured earlier in the thread - Udo Roesner has left AER a while back and has his new version of the compact acoustic amp getting big reviews:

    https://www.guitarworld.com/reviews/udo-roesner-da-capo-75-acoustic-amp-review

P.S. I also gave a lot of stuff away, recording desk and gear a friend left me, plus some guitars for the next Big Project....... and disappointingly I saw it all end up at a pawn shop! I could have taken it al there! We lost another little bit of faith in humanity though....so maybe see if they actually really want the gear.

  4. KISS....

Current best live acoustic guitar with incredible onboard pickup system...my black Maton 808 in a custom Maton branded Hiscox case! (Tommy Emmanuel uses a custom shop Maton 808 plugged direct to a preamp and PA, that is all.)

Plug direct to PA if needed. Great sound. But I like some preamps and knobs and other sounds, so if in no hurry, I will take the Tonedexter preamp/DI and if urgent, my little 4 channel A&H mixer...and if really desperate, my old Genz Benz stereo 60 acoustic amp.

ZW above has hit on the name brand to try - Antique Acoustics bridge pins. They are recreations of the 30s bridge pin material and have black and an off white pin made from Galalith, very popular with the models for old Martins and Gibsons that need the same pin.

They also make pins for newer Gibsons, but it will take a search! Elderly maybe....

It would be easier to just go high density pone pins though......stuff is hard to find lately.

  6. On Prime Amazon, they have the 'because you watched this' stuff lined up and having no life in lockdowns lately, yes, I have followed them down the trap!

So below George is Kris Kristofferson in 'Midnight Stallion' and what a crock that was!

But do we want the 'everyone saves the pumpkin patch' happy ending or the gritty fully depressing one about the Texan acoustic guitarist that was so broke and held on to get the recording contract - they were ringing him to tell him just as the big truck is heading straight for him! Boom....😐

But back to George Strait - here is the whole gang doing "All My Exes Live In Texas" (the witty name reminds me a bit of The Nighcats "My Next Ex Wife"):

P.S. Found a trailer for "The World Won't Break" - grim stuff....:

Didn't make it to the end, ZW? You are sentenced to watch all episodes of Married At First Scream or whatever it is....

The movie is a year after EC went unplugged, so George did a little supposedly unplugged bit here and there and the big ending was ala Elvis sitting at the front of the stage crooning!

    I googled his acoustics:

And here is my 2005 Dove Cherry Burst:

  8. Streaming movies to TV and often there seems to be a million choices but nothing we want to watch!

The Boss and I call one genre of movie 'Save the Pumpkin Farm movie' and all its klunky relatives..........so, watching a fairly recent 'acoustic guitarist gets the girl and saves the pumpkins', did a search of the links displayed underneath on some streaming channels.

And there it was from 1992 - George Strait in Pure Country.....and the movie wasn't a freebie - had to rent it! (I saw it on TV, maybe a midday movie years ago - sure didn't know who George Strait was then or what a Dove Cherry Burst was either!)

But how could I not rent a movie where the hero has a Dove Cherry Burst! Pretty schmaltzy, but you know.....

(My Dove Cherry Burst is going to get urgent new strings and some action, let me tell you!).

Don’t really recall the stand......heart was busy trying to stop!

7 or 8 piece band and roadie totally vanished as everything crashed down, fled! They new I was particular with my stuff.....roadie was banned from taking my guitars down the stairs.....

Standing near the bar in a break in band gig and saw the sax player trip over the PA speaker lead and pull the speaker (JBL 15) off the stand to bounce off the keyboards then knock over the cymbal stand which hit my Strat, Tele, metal Dobro on stands and floored everything.....big dent in the side of Dobro, cymbal cut a big hole in the Tele neck!

Anyway, a friend rang me a few years ago very upset after smacking a big hole (very similar to above) in the front of his 15 series M by hitting the mic on stand. We took it to my luthier and I have to say the repair is very hard to see, and at first look, nothing.... good job, looks like a surgery scar up close. My friend has almost stop kicking himself for it....almost.

The luthier obviously had done this sort of repair a lot and when I asked him how most of his guitar repairs were hurt, he said an amazing amount are left on a chair and forgotten for a minute and..kazzaaam. 😶

  12. What's wrong with gaffa tape?....😝

Maybe a coat of jet black to hide the repair and put it on reverb.com before it falls out. you know ..mint Gibson ebony Hummingbird F/S.

No, kidding though, but a friend had his 15 series Martin hit his mic with similar look and a patch was put in....very good job done....almost invisible but looks like a scar.

    Thanks for posting that, ZW!

Before the previous great leader changed the import/export rules, not sure why, I could just look at Elderly online and contact a couple of people there and get a good deal and a guitar was flying by Fedex direct to my place! Also bought some new Martins, but not allowed now - have to go through a local dealer, who has...zip....

Before that, I had a few nasty learning experiences through eBay. But kudos to Elderly - the pony express always got through and......guitar intact.

Now, most guitars I bought were intact, untouched by them except for their setups (which have been great and have not needed anything done since).........but my 1944 Martin 0-17 had all kinds of things done to it to get it back to playable, including neck set with a small wedge under the end of the neck to make up for previous bad work. So I guess it was on those benches in the video for quite a while. And it still plays great, thanks!

I assume my poor old 1935 L50 Gibson Black Special #4 was also doing time on that bench! Aye Yi Yi. (and that guitar still plays like a new setup guitar!) Thanks again!

    First a few questions...

    Does he know yet? 🤢

Any pics/details of the whole guitar/what is it?

And depending on the  model, it is probably a good time to discuss replacing the whole neck......but you know, if it is rare model, repair the neck.

    BluesKing777.

  15.

    Good to have it back!

But some of the attitudes are a bit suspect.......do you play acoustic guitars all of you, interested in how they tick, or do you just stand in the street screaming at everybody?

Don't waste your money there with that.

If I was you, I would take my guitar to a local setup person that you can 1: trust to do what you want, not what they think you want, and 2: doesn't have your guitar for 4 weeks after you drop it off.

you need dialogue with the person who will do your setups,

    ^^^^^This!!!^^^^^^

Research and find the best local boffin to do everything your guitars need....everything.

I heard about my luthier/tech so many years ago, had a problem with a resophonic in the 90s and was told he was the man. And he is!

Rarely had a problem with anything he does and a most exciting time was getting him to make a custom 00 for me. That has given such an emotional connection that I feel like phoning him and thanking him.....each time I play my custom or a guitar he set.......but so do all his customers!

Weelllll, you could always do what is known as a 'search' and not ask the forum....

But you will probably come away just as confused:

  18. I have a 2002 J50 that has a fairly chunky neck, more playing space everywhere that I prefer compared to a 2010 J45 Standard I use to own....

Looks like you have a plain old J45!  (though it could be a J46 Historic).

    BluesKing777.

  19.

What year was your J45 made?

The Standard moniker appeared around 2008, with slim taper beck and Baggs Element pickup with Tusq saddle that supposedly works better for the pickup, black Graphteck nut?, pearl Logo, etc.....

Someone counted recently, but there has been a few J45 models!
