I ended up ordering 3 of them and kept the best one. The variation between the 3 are crazy. One was super bassy, almost sounded like it had dead strings on from the factory. One was balanced but a bit muted and didn't responate as much. The one I kept was the one I thought sounded the best and resonates the most. But this one had tuners that didn't work well (the pegs spin freely before catching the gear) and we're installed not well. The one I kept had a saddle that sat flush in they bridge. The other two had crooked saddles.

Maybe Gibson is doing this on purpose because the vintage guitars are all crazy like this as well lol. Personally I thought all the guitars would be perfect but just sound slightly different

I'm not a fan of the light ageing but wanted a custom shop l-00 and didn't like the rosewood one

Interesting but not unheard of approach - buy 3 and keep the best one!

Do you have to pay up front for all 3 or just the one ONE? I assume they were purchased online from 3 different shops as the shops I have viewed online only have one new L-00 each?

I semi happily buy anything BUT guitars online these days but I really should employ the buy 3 keep 1 approach to.......everything! QC for guitars bad enough but other stuff like clothes, shoes....well, let us say the sellers are doing their own thing!

Truth be told, any guitar I have bought has been the ONLY one the shop had, real shop or online.

Anyway, thanks for the update and I have lost interest in bad QC guitars- can’t believe the wobbly ones still go out the door.

P.S. nearly forgot - what is the L-00 Murph like to play?

Hello all. so maybe can help me. Maybe somebody can recommend me good acoustic guitar? What means good?

I don't know, I have cheap guitar that bought 10 years ago, and it was maybe 60$ bucks value.

So budget not very important, but important guitar size, strings quality, maybe I can do, or some music workshops can changes something for better playing and learning on guitar, and etc.

what would good start for learning on guitar. Any information, or really helpfull guides would be nice. If you need more accurate budget, sites, maybe I can buy something from 2nd hand just ask me.

I wanna acoustic guitar with steel strings, maybe in future i'm gonna buy one with nylon(I like warm and cosy sound). Wanna electro acoustic, but would be better it have better quality in acoustic mode,

than pluged. Shape - cut off, or not cut off, I somewhere read, cutoff is better when you wanna reach higher frets, and it's give a bit bass for sound. Don't know what shape would be good for beginner.

Here is a video on a couple of acoustics from Acoustic Letter - they rave about these two budget models on various forums - I have never seen or heard any of them in the flesh, but I played a new Yamaha FS5 (2nd video below), way, way more expensive but also heavily raved about everywhere, at a local shop and it was just beautiful....concert size, torrefied top, based on the famous 60s models we are told....though I personally prefer wider necks and spacing for my fingerstyle playing........but it would be an inspiring guitar to begin on. (or you can ignore us all and go and buy the most expensive acoustic in the local guitar shop! Get the Gibson with all the inlays! 😛)

These 2, you could be like the learner driver in the BMW!

And my preference in guitar shape old and new!

I ordered the l-00. Was only able to play it for like a minute before heading to a show but it didn't seem like it had the mid range Gibson dry wood tone to my ears. My 42 reissue has more of it I think. But I have to get home to play it more

We await an update on the L-00 after you play it a while!

Like I mentioned earlier somewhere, the new Gibson acoustics are scalloped braced whereas my old Gibsons AND Waterloo WL-14X are NON scalloped (my other Waterloo is ladder braced like an old Kalamazoo KG-14). So the new Gibson is not really an exact reissue. Same goes for your new LG2.

The Waterloos both capture that dry old mid range small body vintage Gibson. Sometimes the ladder braced sounds older than the real ones! It is a rare thing.....why though, I do not know. Design? Build? Bracing? Both Waterloos have ebony nuts, ebony bridge pins, ebony bridge but rosewood fretboard, flatback construction, wide spacing, very very light.....I’m about to play my ladder right now!

Whatever level of Player he was, he single handedly made the Guitar the most desirable Instrument to own & play in history! No Elvis, No Beatles & ten million other Bands!

    True!

But he wanted that rifle for his birthday, not the guitar Ma bought him! Could have turned out way different....I can imagine him saying:  'Shucks, Ma, but I don't want no geetar - I want that rifle....or that bike!'

I didn’t notice fretboard rolling in my L-00 murphy, edges are very sharp. I do think they do it on heavy relic 58-60 electric’s.

So you also have the new L-00 Murphy Lab as well as your L-00 Legend?

Fantastic stuff, please report and compare!

And please measure the bridge spacing (on both guitars) !!! Compare necks!

Amen Brother.  The comfiest Gibson I play has a just under 1 7/8" nut, a V carve neck clocking in at a depth of 1.05" at the 1st fret, and in this case a 2 5/16" string spacing at the bridge.  Thinking back on it though had I wanted a stand in for the L1, I might very well have opted for a Waterloo. I recall though when those first Waterloos came out, it took me maybe a year before I could get my hands on even one as every guitar Mass Street Music (which was 20 minutes down the road) got in was sold before it ever hit the shelves.

We never know anything! One of my justifications for a Waterloo when they first came out was that they were way more L-00 than the new Gibson ones and......ha ha, wrong.....easier to get than the vintage ones! Boing. Bong. Boing......A quick look on Reverb.com and it appears a used Waterloo is around double the new price I paid back when.... and they are not making many new ones.

On another track - watching the Murphy Labs video, Murphy mentions he ‘rolls’ the neck edges like years of hand wear does. Who knew that acoustics were so sharp edged and uncomfortable, eh? But I have 2 examples - one is my Cargill custom 00 where he rolled all edges to give a fab ‘old leather glove’ feel (the neck and specs were based on my Martin OM18V, but more ‘rounded out’ by hand.)

My other example is my Taylor 717e Builders Edition - every sharp thing is rounded off ‘for comfort’ - that was the claim.

P.S. Still trying to find the bridge spacing on the Murph Labs L-00.......

I have always wondered though if I would have sprung for something like an L-00 Legend if I did not own a 1932 12 fret L1.  If nothing else, the 1 3/4" nut and 2 3/8" string spacing at the bridge quickly makes it rise to the top of the Gibson heap.

That 2 3/8" bridge spacing belongs to an ever decreasing little club! Wonderful combined with a big V neck for fingerpickers and thus the bane of flatpickers.

And one of the reasons I love my Waterloo X and L...... Perfect!

What else is in the club? Gibson L-00 Legend, you say? All Waterloos???; Martin OM18V, Martin OM18A. Can't think of another....

Have not found out the bridge spacing for the new Gibson L-00 Murphy Lab.

  8. After watching the interview with Tom Murphy I posted, I wonder if the Murph Lab acoustics will eventually be available in all the Murphy 4 ageing stages? The new ones are currently all ‘light aged’......

I’m thinking the 32 L-00 for me with some severe relic! Could probably get it as a ‘custom’? What I appreciate is that the fretboard and frets are untouched, new, ready to go, where some vintage guitars I have bought...well....

My guitars rarely look any different after I play them for 20 years - they are never going to look ‘relic’d’.......so to buy a bashed up new acoustic is not that different than me buying a bashed up old guitar - I didn’t do any of it, just bought it!

Give us the 4 Murph ageing system, Gibson!

I'm plugging into a voice live 3 extreme into a JBL Eon compact one PA.

I use the pre section of the voice live 3 extreme to do a -18db reduction in the high frequency at 14,000hz with s bandwidth of 3.0 and it takes the edge off of the high shrill

That should sound great for guitar AND vocal!

So, though gear like that, I would want a pickup that needs.......err, no adjustment at all,  just sound great plugged direct.

So big pain, you need to sort this pickup or ...move it. And somehow try all the other pickups.....or fluke one you like. Could get expensive!

Like I said earlier, my Maton 808s are ready to plug anywhere, anytime.....good enough for Tommy Emmanuel, way too good for me then! But then you have to buy a Maton. I spent a small fortune trying to make my other guitars road ready like the Matons. After a lot of trial and error, and a large box of pickup failures, I found I like the K&K Trinity system. It has an internal mic and a K&K pickup in the guitar running to a black box preamp with controls  outside the guitar.......a bit of a nuisance - the comprehensive Maton controls are on the side of the guitars.

P.S. My first foray into the K&K Trinity - I took my guitar to my luthier and asked for him to order and install a K&K Trinity. When he rang me to say it is all done, I arrived to find he bought the wrong model -  a fully Onboard K&K Trinity system - everything in the guitar, battery, mini EQ, mini gain etc......the parts stick to the back of the guitar non permanently, I am told.....but it most certainly made the guitar a lot quieter acoustically, stopping the back moving! I forgave the luthier everything because it sounds sensational! And they don’t really make the onboard anymore - unless you order. So.....

I just got the guitar back from the luthier. So I had a few things done to the guitar. I had the action lowered, I had the LR bags high five installed and I added a strap button. The previous owner still had the factory strings on the guitar. So new strings were installed as well.

Unplugged the guitar seems to play a little softer, and I think I have lost a little bit of that dry Woody Gibson tone. Also it is way brighter, because of the new strings.

Plugged in with the LR bags hi-fi, I got to say, I don't really like it. You have to turn the tone all the way down in order to get the sparkly-ness of the strings out of the sound. The highs are so pronounced. It's like every little touch of the strings can be heard. And it's got this very brittle high frequency sound to it. I would almost argue that the pickup is unusable unless the tone is slammed all the way down.

Overall, I am kind of bummed about it.

String gauge stayed the same, I actually think that one of the bigger causes of the reduction in sound quality is the lowering of the action, the tension on a saddle is reduced in my opinion

    No good?

    Ratz.....

When you say plugged in, what are you plugging to? This could make a big difference in sound.

Pickups and forum advice....phew.....I’ve had 2 guitars with Anthem mentioned, OK but.....I didn’t really like. So, next mission is to firstly, make your paid for pickup sound better and if still no good, remove it and try the other 4000 pickups available......

    Correct!

My luthier got most of the writing off, repaired a few nasty spots left by a guitar stand..., new bone saddle, new bone nut.....and gave the lot a beautiful setup!

  12. Congratulations!

I have my pawn shop find 2006 Cherry Burst that I picked up a number of years ago and recently had repaired.

The Cherry Burst is just ' a light in the black' to cheer up those dull days! (Though I do feel like I should wear a paisley headband.....):

  13. Old thread but same old.....

I play 100% fingerpicking and love 1 3/4” nut with V neck and 2 3/8” bridge spacing.......and players like me could tend to think the acoustic world is run and  overrun by strummers!😁

My preferred specs are thin on the ground. They are out there but........

Then around 2014, Wahoo! Bill Collings brought out the Waterloo WL-14s with just the preferred spec!

Otherwise, can’t think of any new ‘standard’ acoustics to suit. I am keen to play the new Gibson 1932 L-00 Murphy Lab, hoping they give it some room!

I know a solution to save fingerpickers their hard earned........put a big red label on each acoustic - FINGERPICKER and the STRUMMER. (Unlikely to happen as they may miss out on a sale).

Give it 20 years of ownership on a brand spanking new one.  Play the heck out of it. Leave it resting on the couch. Knock it over a few times.  And youll have one without paying a upcharge. 😁

More concerned how the ageing affects the tone.........Martin aged guitar players seem to think the checking opens up the sound and worth the premium.

I don’t suppose anyone knows the bridge spacing of the L-00 Murph Lab?

  15. I find it incredibly ironic that the only model sold of the Murphy Lab Gibson Acoustic offerings at Music Villa is the...ha ha, the one they didn't do last time around with the Historic Series - the L-00!!!

    I want one!

I see they are selling one at Sweetwater:

I play open mics, i'm playing a festival next weekend, im also a recording artist.

However, im not sure what the goal of this particular banner gibson is, whether i would even take it to a festival where im playing it outside and jumping around or just keeping it in the studio. It would be nice to have the ability to plug in, live though.

    Another question.

If I went ahead, and went for a piezo under saddle transducer like the LR Baggs Element VTC, and the guitar doesnt sound as good unplugged, was it drilling the hole through the body for the pickup the issue, or is it the piezo itself?

another way of phrasing the question, can i undo the worsening of the unplugged sound by taking the piezo out, or is it permanently altered because i drilled that extra hole?

I feel like it should go back to how it was before since it comes with 6 holes already drilled through the body (for the strings)?

I am the wrong person to ask, sorry - I can’t stand the sound of Baggs Elements.....I have spent fortunes installing dual source pickup systems (pickup and mic and preamp) to get a realistic acoustic sound. I also own 4  true road warrior dual source Maton 808s, the best pickup systems in existence.

So my advice would be to buy a passive soundhole pickup like the Mojotone or the Black Angel and take it out when finished. I myself would not be taking my newly bought Gibson to play outside, but ....people do.

I miss typed the title. It's not actually a vintage guitar. It's a 2 year old reissue.

Since it is a Reissue, installing a pickup won't affect it's value right?

    Mistype?

No matter, Gibson probably put the wrong neck on the guitar anyway!

    Kidding...

It is still quite an expensive acoustic - the answer depends on your plans. What do you want a pickup for? Are you playing solo. Are you in a band? Got gigs? Playing just open mics? Playing at home to learn the gear?

So if you are just playing at home or a friend’s to try things out, just place a soundhole pickup with the leading hanging out, for now.

If you doing open mics or gigs, get the pickup installed so you don’t trip on the lead!

Hi there, I recently bought a 1942 Banner lg-2 custom shop Gibson. It does not come with a pickup. And I am curious what everyone is doing in regards to a pickup.

I saw that the fishman Rare Earth blend has a mic included, including a blend function. However, you have to enlarge the strap buttonhole. I believe.

I want something that ideally doesn't affect the natural tone of the guitar much. But also has a good sound when plugged in.

It looks like the m80 and the fishman Rare Earth are the top contenders. Is there anything else I should take into consideration? Saw something about a k&k but don't know too much about it

Does enlarging the strap button affect the tone?

There are quite a few brands of pickups that slot into the soundhole - you can have one fully installed with the plug in the endpin area, or you can dangle  the lead out the front, perhaps to wrap behind  your strap at the endpin area.......take the pickup out when not being used - great for valuable vintage acoustics that you don’t want to alter in any way.

Staying with soundhole pickups, some have no battery (passive)  while others have all kinds of arrangements for having a mini electronic preamp on the pickup.

Passive ones with no battery to change are pretty carefree, but may need another blackbox for controls/eq in between what you are plugging to...amp, PA mixer.....

A lot of people have been raving  about the Mojotone passive. They also make one with an internal mic and preamp, not passive!

And on the list will go..........

But...do you have your own lab, Murph? Sorry.

In the video from Casino Guitars, they mentioned that it is really hard to do the relic stuff without breaking something.....what happens if it looks a bit ordinary - will the guitar get a bit more paint and do it all again? I mean, they don’t want it to look awful, even though a lot of old guitars can look pretty weird..... OK and all good for 20 orders, but if they get 20, 000 plus?
