rfiori9
is the serial number on the 76 sg a sticker ( transfer) or is it embossed?
L5Larry
75,76, & 77 serial numbers were typically on waterslide transfer decals.
cjsinla
According to one info site: Gibson Serial Numbers, 1975-1977.All models, decal, 2 digit prefix followed by 6 digits. The decal can also state the model name/number. Prefix Year------ --- 99 1975 00 1976 06 1977
Jon S.
75,76, & 77 serial numbers were typically on waterslide transfer decals. Yup. I've seen a few 77's that were stamped in the wood, but most have the decal.
rfiori9
Here is a photo of the headstock in question. Does it look like a 76?
BigKahune
. It would have been nice if the photo included enough neck to show whether the guitar has a volute. Does the guitar have a volute? If not, it's not from the 70s. 76 should have a decal. Also, the 6 digits following the 00 prefix should be in the 100000 to 200000 range and you have 455664. AFAIK in 1977 Gibson did some decals then eventually went to stamping the modern YDDDYRRR format serial#. Also, the tuner backs of that style on the 76s I've seen had a lube hole in them. You can see the volute, serial#, and tuner backs in the 76 LP pic below.
btoth76
Hello! That's a guitar made on February 14th, 2005. In July, they have changed over to 9-digit s/n format. The 1976 serial number format is different: those have a space right after the two 0s, and the letters are smaller. Gibsons of mid-70s have laminated necks, not one-piece (not counting the wings) as seen on OPs photo. Cheers... Bence P.S.: As seen on the photo right above. :) Edited August 6, 2013 by btoth76

rfiori9
Thanks to everyone. My gut was telling me this was not a '76 from the few photos I saw and you guys nailed it. Thanks again.
Jorge Gibson
Hi there, can anyone explain the meaning of the digits after the '00 for 1976? My LP Standard is #00235039. A challenge for the experts: can you discover if it was built in Kalamazoo or Nashville plant and in what precise day and month?
FGC
I've got an old Les Paul Custom with serial # 00113578. Can anyone advise what year it was built?
