335 vs Dot

What is the difference.

Thanks.

Well, for starters:

Not trying to be a smart a$$ here, but the biggest diff's are USA vs China. I have a Dot that I modded with upgraded p/u's wiring, pot's, switches, etc. and it works for me. Still has a poly finish, hot nitro, and a lot less "bling" i.e. binding, etc. but hey, it's still less than half the price of a 335. YMMV>

BTW, not endorsing MF, just using their links.

335 is fancier (inlays, binding among other things), more "bling", features, controls. The Dot isn't as "maxed out" but they are both the same size, same neck shape, fretboard radius, length, dimensions ...the same, but different...lolmsp_biggrin.gifmsp_lol.gif

I believe the Sheraton, Riviera, Dot, ES 335, 345, 355, Casino are all the same basic dimensions/shape...maybe others too.

reading before posting could be more helpful...... #-o

I was trying to demo the tonal difference the best that can be done via you tube. The title of the thread "335 vs Dot". You Tube vid is 335 vs Dot. The OP was not specific on what differences thus my reply.

Well I deleted what I wanted to say as after thinking about it I thought it would be best. :-)

Well Dennis I was on the same wavelength as you - when Grif said ...I was under the impression that the Dot was Epi's version of a 335... then I'd assume this meant Gibson 335 too.

Grif, for background the 'what's the difference between a Gibson and an Epiphone?' question is a regular cause of ...frustration and annoyance for some here. However the question of difference between 2 similar epis is a good one (to me) for those of us for whom spec sheets aren't fun to read - so answers like Crust's about the stripped back features etc are very informative and to the point.

Welcome to the forum too. [thumbup]

Here is what I should have posted. Are the differences between an epi dot and an epi 335 pro mainly cosmetic or I would I notice a big difference in tone. Thanks to all who tried to answer my somewhat cryptic question.

Cosmetic, mostly as well as price.. I sound like me, no matter what I play. These guitars sound similar, the Dot Studio is the most inexpensive Dot type. Not to belittle the lowly Dot Studio, but, again, I have read (no links) that the hardware isn't that good, they "don't stand the test of time" (switches stop working, tone and volume controls get scratchy, then stop working...sooner on the "cheap" Epiphone). Lots of owners change out the hardware, switches, pickups, but not me. msp_mellow.gif Mine still works and sounds OKmsp_thumbup.gif, without breaking (yet)msp_cool.gif. 200 hours, or so total play time (estimate), still going.

I think it looks great toomsp_smile.gif.

Pics

The ES 335 Pro, played it all day, and then some, until I broke a string (I will, some day, put the graphtech saddles on..and then play again. Hopefully, the string(s) will last longer...lol)

What do you think ?
