neil stewart
looking to buy a epi explorer. Guy bought it from an estate sale. The thing throwing me off is the nut cover says gibson. Previous owner could have done that. I can't find any explorers with gibson on the nut cover. Any ideas?
capmaster
They made Epiphone guitars with GIBSON letters engraved on truss rod covers for several years. You may refer to http://epiphonewiki.com/index.php/Explorer
Jon S.
Yep, the "Gibson" truss rod covers came on most Epiphone models throughout the 90's and early 2000's.
neil stewart
Found out it's a 2003 model year. Think trading for a usa fender strat made in 2012 is a good deal? On eBay the epi explorer 400-600 thanks!

crust
That is a unreal guitar. I think I might get a second one...$300.00...look at that thing, and it sounds...well, perfect...that's how it sounds
neil stewart
If you had to choose a epiphone made in China or Korea, would the Korean be better? The explorer I'm looking at was made in Inchon Korea
crust
Well, that's a question that has been discussed before. Some say the Korean built instuments are "better"...To me...I don't believe. The Korean guitars are built by master craftsmen...but so are the Chinese made ones. So, I really see no difference...It's an Epiphone...great guitars, no matter where they come from. Give a craftsman a blueprint, the necessary tools and equipment, the "bill of materials" and similar manufacturing processes and quality control measures and similar manufacturing materials, no matter where they are made, if they are made to "engineering specifications", they'll all be the same...basically... crust
Thomse (and anyone else)...I have a "theory" about Epiphone guitars, or the Gibson "family", which includes Epiphone; guitars that are being produced "today". To me, it is obvious that there is "internal competition" between he Chinese/Indonesian/India...wherever "Epiphones" are made...maybe several manufacturing factories and "USA Gibson"... It seems to me that this "healthy competition" between the "master luthiers" is producing some of the finest Epiphone guitars ever produced...presently. Many new models and re-releases of "old favorites"... and the quality of the guitars I have obtained relatively recently is absolutely superb. So, I do believe the Chinese factory workers have "something to prove", and have done just that. Also...who designed the Riviera P93, Wildkat. Emperor Swingster ? That person (imho)should get a raise in pay. The instruments (you have all seen some of he pictures I've posted) are Epiphone exclusive designs...as are other models...Casino, Wilshire ...these guitar are plainly put, "fine instruments" and the Epiphone Les Paul "line" is making some unreal guitars, beautiful works of art in themselves...the "Pro" and "plus top" guitars are all anyone really needs, great guitars for great guitarists.... I do hope the "healthy competition" continues...it only helps all the "guitar builders" that make Gibson/Epiphone guitars just "that much" better... Just a "hunch" as well as a "personal observation". The guitars Epiphone is making, right now, are imho the best value in guitars that the consumer can obtain. Excellent "value" . dig it ? Plus, they are just plain fun to play
crust
Here is a photo of the head stock and truss rod cover on an Epiphone Les Paul Special II (LP Special 2). I got that guitar (which I no longer have) at the Boston Guitar Center about 15-20 years ago. Notice no "special" script and the Gibson trc. So yes, an "LP2" is a Gibson, says it right there on the trc......must be worth $2-3000...maybe more...right? Same with your Explorer...right ?
