Did the Joe Pass ever come stock with a Bigsby and Tune-o-matic bridge ? I am looking at one on craigslist and the seller says he is the original owner and bought it new stock set up that way. attached is a pic. according to serial no. it is 1995 model. is it a decent guitar ? I thought I'd offer $450 (he's asking $490)

thank you !

I don't think they came stock like this. should be a good one. 450 would be a fair price.

as nice or nicer than a Gretsch Electromatic G5420 ??

Who really knows?...that's all a matter of opinion. I would consider that for roughly 100 bucks more than what he's asking; you could get a new G5420. but if you are interested in the Joe Pass, you should go check it out in person if you can. it could be the ONE.

don't know that gretch model but gretch pickups don't sound like epi humbuckers.

is that better? worse?

dunno

for sure, it's different..

I'd never say never, but I'd think a '95 with anything Bigsby-ish would have been a Vibrotone. I think it's likeliest this was an end user mod, not factory. But who knows?

Additionally, I'd think the huge hunk of aluminum would kill a jazz box top's resonance and tone. I've played Casinos with and without, and the difference is huge, even unplugged.

The Joe Pass never had a factory Bigsby or Tune-O-Matic. I have both a Joe Pass and a Gretsch 5420, and they are very different sounding guitars, even though the dimensions are similar. The Joe Pass has that warm, full-throated jazz tone (although the bridge pickup can get very rockish too), while the Gretsch is much more crisp and bright -- almost like single coil pickups. I use it more for funk and reggae rhythm playing.
