SG 12-String Neck-Through

SG-12

Recommended Posts

I've reached out to Gibson's customer service for confirmation of my observations concerning the SG 12-String Neck-Through, but never got a reply.  My goal is to document the variances noted on this beautiful instrument.

On the Gibson website, the guitar is listed as a 2016 limited run (75 unit per color in Cherry or Vintage Sunburst).  http://legacy.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2016/USA/SG-12-String-Neck-Through-Limited.aspx

However, there exist some with 2017 serial numbers.  One such 2017 is currently on sale at Wildwood Guitars.  https://wildwoodguitars.com/product/170025373/2017-gibson-sg-standard-12-string/

From what I've seen, per the inspection cards these 2017 models were built in October 2016.  The rear of the headstock simply shows the 2017 serial number and "Made In USA" (without the additional "2016 Model" as found on 2016 serial numbers).

Further, all  2017 models (and some 2016) have black  toggle-switch caps.  The Gibson website only shows a white cap.

It would be interesting to know the number that were produced with each of these variances.  This should be easily determined since so few were made.
Considering the premium price tag, Gibson owes this information to purchasers.

Disappeared from Wildwood

As usual, these guitars disappear quite fast.  It is already gone from Wildwood not long after this posting.

However, a cached version of their website still shows the features of the 2017 SG 12-String Neck-Through.

Correction:  I came across a 2017 Vintage Sunburst with a white toggle-switch cap that sold over 1 year ago on Reverb.

It appears that both "black" and "white" caps were used for both 2016 and 2017.

Rather than the 2017's being a custom run, I believe they are part of the original "75 unit per color" limited run.

Only Gibson knows for sure, and they're not telling.

One other variance is "SG" on the truss rod cover that can only be found in the Musician's Friend demo video.

Strangely when the guitar was in stock at Musician's Friend, "SG" was not in any of the photos.  Rather, the truss rod cover shown on the website was the typical blank.

I know the one in question in sunburst above that Wildwood had up was not part of a run made for them. I was thinking of buying it and they told me it was an on consignment instrument for a customer. It was brought in to the store and not purchased there.
