Reg77
Just received one of these new as a web purchase. The VOS finish appears as if they left a layer of wax on the guitar/hardware. Not sure about this being desirable? The neck binding has considerable bleed/overspray (see pic). A scratch on the fingerboard at the 8th fret (see pic). And finally, a nice scratch between the pickups (see pic). It's a challenge to capture the last 2 with the camera, but they're there. BTW, I was assured this was not a return. Where's the QA? Dub-T-123
The finish bleeding onto the binding is an intentional feature of the historic guitars. If you don’t like the VOS you can get the gloss version. If you aren’t happy I would suggest returning it. I can’t see the scratches in the pictures though
Reg77
Didn't know about the bleeding being a feature of the VOS, talks for clarifying. What about fingerboard & body scratches?
Dub-T-123
The bleeding is a “historic” feature, not necessarily VOS. It would be present on the gloss version as well I can’t see the scratches in the pics
Reg77
I'll try to take some better ones in the light today. The one on the fretboard looks like a razor blade went across it. Reg77
Sorry, but unable to capture a clean shot up close with either of my cameras Regardless, I'm assuming this is not part of the VOS treatment. It's not that deep so I'm wondering ifI would be able to remove it (fingerboard scratch at the 10th fret) somehow?
Reg77
Had a friend look at it today and he thinks that the scratches are actually subtle file marks. Is this common?
merciful-evans
You sound unhappy about this guitar. Perhaps a refund is the best option? Perfection in finish will always be difficult to find though.
Reg77
I actually like the feel & sound of the SG. I'm disappointed that at this price level, Gibson is sloppy in their finish work. I'm assuming the file marks are easy to remove?
Dub-T-123
So the finish work is sloppy but the scratch is too fine for you to show in a pic.. I have a feeling anything you do to try to remove the scratches won’t be so difficult to see...
