the SG special has a “wrap around bridge”

The first Les Paul’s came with a wrap around bridge as well

the intonation was not adjustable and quickly dropped in favour of now stand TOM bridge and tail pieces

many ignore intonation problems in favour of nostalgia

The SG Special arrived in 1959 as the successor to the single-cutaway Les Paul Special of 1955–'58. The SG Special embraced all of that guitar's features, but its double-cutaway styling gave it a sleeker and racier appearance.

Why is the bridge pickup, in the original series special, so close to the bridge?

They had to put it somewhere. They originally tried the back of the guitar but there wasn't an amp with enough watts to amplify it.
