Les Paul Custom Axcess Ebony??? What have I got here???

Hi,

First time here. Long story - I ordered an Axcess in gun metal grey (w/floyd) from a major UK retailer. Got the guitar but it had clearly been played (lots of dings / buckle rash etc) so I complained. They took it back and told me there was a delay in getting hold of these guitars. I needed one so I explained that I wasn't fussed on the finish or the floyd. They called back to say they could get a custom axcess in ebony (w/stop bar) which was very rare. I said great and I now have the guitar but I have a couple of issues. I can't find any information about this guitar anywhere online and I'm hoping you guys can help me out. It's my first LP custom (if that's what it is!). There are a lot of 'polish marks' on the finish which I was told is not uncommon with a custom LP because of the way they are built but there's also a tiny split in the wood beneath the top E on the 1st fret. Would that normally have passed Gibson quality control? Don't get me wrong, the guitar is stuning and plays like a dream, I just want to know that I've not been conned! Can anyone please help? Pics enclosed. Cheers http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee257/pauljosephstafford/zzz025.jpg

Update - Just found another online at http://www.zuitar.com/guitar/102353-Les_Paul_Axcess_Custom.html

However this has led to more questions - My LP has a plain truss rod cover whereas the one you can see on the link says LP custom.

Can anyone help? I'm seriously confused here!

Joe, that's a weird guitar. It's definitely not a regular Les Paul Custom. You can tell from the neck joint...but at the same time, it's missing the Floyd; so, it's not a regular Axcess. Email those pictures to Gibson and make sure you include the serial number. Ask customer service what the guitar is exactly and if it's parted of a limited run.

Hmmm, I love Les Pauls and I love Floyds. The Axcess is interesting because of the Floyd although the combo does look wrong, but who gives a damn! You can put a Krahmer on the one you got without making a hole through the body.

Whomever your retailer is you should let us know because it sucks that you spend on a custom (I think she's real) and they gave you one with a split on the neckboard. I will never buy from these guys if you tell us who it is.=D>[-X [-X Posting our complaints will make retailers work harder.

Ok, the retailer the retailer is Dawsons Music in the UK. Not saying anything against them at this stage, never had an issue with them before. Anyone offer me advice on the different truss rod cover, 'polish marked' custom finish and neck split? Don't really want to send this one back but it's a helluva lot of money for an imperfect guitar.

All responses appreciated.

I have owned several new black Gibsons over the years and none of them came out of the box with polish swirls, they all had pristine finishes and the swirls can only be caused by one thing, someone has been handling/playing the guitar then polished it. If it sits around and gets played in the store this would be the cause and that is pretty common for new instruments, but again the dealer should tell you the exact condition of the guitar if you are paying the big price for a new one. The crack would never have passed Gibson QC unless someone really was sleeping on the job. It looks like it must have happened after it was shipped from the factory, either from the wood not being properly dried/treated before assembly or from a blow to the neck.

I would ask for a discount or send it back. This retailer is not being up front with you. The polish swirls are not so big of a deal, you would have polished it yourself after a bit anyway. But the crack in the fretboard is a HUGE issue, that looks like it may spread over time and cause you major problems that will be expensive to fix if not covered by warranty. Even if covered you could spend a lot on shipping the guitar to get fixed and be without it for a while. If this is in fact how he is receiving the guitar from Gibson, then he should take up the issue with them and not make it your problem. If you love the guitar, I think it will not be long before other custom versions will be readily availbale, both with stoptail and Floyd Rose, and you can spend the money on one that is in new mint condition.

i thought they "weren't producing the custom" i know i'd seen it for order right after it first showed up at namm. if it's real totally cool...

just wondering where the complaints about the floyd rose on the Les Paul were in the Neal Shon Custom and Epiphone Goth days.

Well said! I think it's a GREAT idea to have Gibson put a Floyd on a Les Paul model, I just have to get used to the idea.........

Gibson toyed with the LP Floyd idea in the late 80s too with the LP Custom Lite. Very rare. It didn't last long.

This is mine.
