heymisterk
I own a SG Special obviously, but have never played a Les Paul with the P-90s. Just curious...What would the difference in tone would be in general? They just seem so similar: same pick-ups strapped to a mahogany body. Any thoughts? Twiz
I haven't played either, but I do have a Les Paul Special and an SG Standard. -They both have the same pups (490R and 498T). My LP has a slightly beefier tone. -Just a little thicker. It's probably because the LP is a thicker slab of wood. Judging by that, I'm guessing the same would be true for a LP and SG with P-90's. I'm not sure though.
heymisterk
That would have been my guess as well. BTW...Great Mitch Hedberg quote, RIP...funniest comedian ever, IMHO
Riffster
I would guess the same thing, just like an Explorer sounds beefier than an SG with the same pickups. I am gassing for a solid bodied P90 guitar myself, my csino has very decent pickups but any gain and it feedbacks like a mofo.
ShredAstaire
So P90s in a solid body won't squeal when you gain it up a bit? I dunno **** about this ****...
Riffster
Casinos are completely hollow (no block) and with P90's you get a double whammy. P90's on a solidbody will be more resistant to feedback and squeal, of course if you turn up the gain enough there will be squeal but you can get a lot of good sounds before that happens. Funny thing is that there is an SG Classic on eBay and the guy claims you can do metal with it, that I am not so sure about.

The high-gain would probably just make the guitar feed-back like crazy. I want something with P-90's more for the clean tone, but I think they can really sing/growl with a touch of overdrive. Piro
I am getting ready for a guitar with P-90's. I am torn between the SG Classic, or a Les Paul Special. I own 2 LP's, and a SG Standard, and I generally agree with the rest of the posts regarding the basic difference in sound between the two models. The SG I am considering has a great tonal range. Every note on the neck seems to jump out at me. While the LP's I have been playing sounded a bit dull. My girlfriend has a Les Paul 56 reissue with P-90'S and that guitar sounds great...maybe it's the maple cap? I dunno. As crazy as it sounds, I have been able to get a workable metal sound from all of these guitars I am describing above......But I also play through Marshalls, and pick very, very hard. Guest rogerb
The Les Paul will have a bit more sustain and yes should be beefier in comparison. Solid body guitars should not feedback unless there is a breach in the windings or you are holding your guitar face forward directly into your amp... looks good though!
