Fake Dot Paranoia

Hi

i bought this Dot a while back, used, but for a good price off ebay. However, a friend of mine pointed out that the Epi logo looks different....

I was wondering if it is a fake. Having said that, The pups are Epiphone stamped and there are no other reasons for me to think that it could be a fake.

What do you think?

Compared to the logo on my Casino:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK...I checked my 3 Epiphones....one USA Sheraton, one USA (Kalamazoo) Casino, and a Korean Riviera...

They have the same Epiphone script, with some differences in lettering width. BUT, the main thing is,

that the connecting line between the "o" and the "n" is in the middle of the letter (like on your Casino),

on ALL my Epi's, regardless of place or date of manufacture!

The thing that's suspect, to me, is that the Dot you have, has an uneven line, and at the bottom, of

the letters (o & n). Is that conclusive proof it's a fake? I doubt it...but it's "interesting" and somewhat

curious. Others here, may know more, and be able to help?

Things made overseas, can have widely varying specs. So, it may just be one of those situations?

Mmmmm.. you got me curious too. I have taken a look at the pups again and they are both genuine Epis, or the look like it and certainly sound like they are.

The thing is, I may be missing the point here. I have had many guitars over the years, including Gibsons and other Epiphones, I also now own a MIK Casino and a USA Tele, but I am really impressed with this guitar. The finish, the feel, the sound, action all really good. Should it be bothering me or should I just be satisfied that I have a nice guitar????

"Bothering you?" Well, I guess only You can determine that. There are a fair amount of

"Fakes" on E-bay, and more so, all the time, apparently. But, that doesn't mean your Dot is...

The logo lettering differences, might be just what was done at that particular factory? I just

think it's odd, that...in the case of my own Epi's, which were manufactured in 3 different locals,

and in a time period spaning 42 years...the logos on the headstocks are the same configuration,

if differing only slightly in letter thickness. But, the way they're scripted, and connected, is

identical!

Having said all that...if you LOVE it, and it does everything you need it to do...Just play the Hell out of it!

Checked it and it said it was made at the Peerless plant in 2005. Not sure whether to trust it completely though. I once saw an Epi LP which had a serial number saying it was an Epi acoustic MIK....

Thanks for your help CB by the way.

Well, not sure I helped much, but you're quite welcome!!

I think, probably, your "Dot" is ok. As I we've all mentioned, before...

there are a lot of "variables" in the various factories. Some of which

ARE puzzling, for sure. But, it's probably legit! And, as before...if you

really like/love it, and the price was ok...that's what counts! I'd say..

just ENJOY it! Play it, 'til you wear it out, and get something else, if

needed/wanted.

Ant7629....is the "Epiphone" on your Dot "Stenciled" (painted), or inlayed.

It looks stenciled...which might explain why the "o-n" connection is broken,

and off kilter...maybe the stencil cracked or broke, and they just pasted it

back together, to get the job done??? Just curious...

Just found that discussion. Its titled: Epiphone guitar headstock monogram...have you ever wondered?

It doesn't really prove mine to be fake or real, but it does show how many different ones there have been over the years.

How can I tell if it is stenciled or not? Shall I post some closer pics?

This is baffling. I wonder if Uncle Al could help...............

That's the correct logo for a Dot. It's different than the one they put on the LPs; it's actually closer to the true Epiphone logo from the old days. Yours is a bit sloppy, and it looks to me as if the inlay piece got broken and they just put the two pieces in the headstock. However all else seems to indicate that it's a legitimate Dot. Even the guys at Peerless have bad days I guess.

Thats a relief. There is so much talk of fakes at the moment, I guess I got curious. There is a huge discussion going on about fake Gibsons from China in this forum.....

What colours do they do the Dot in? I ask because mine is Cherry, but looks quite dark when compared to pics on the internet...

Again, they can vary quite a lot. Also, photographs on the internet are not good ways to judge

the "real" color. Some may be quite accurate, others, can be WAY off! Another reason it's best

to go see/play what you're interested in, as opposed to just taking a chance off E-bay or even

the On Line Dealers. Some, however aren't that particular, with regard to "actual" color. Other

folks (myself included) are "nit pickers!" In fact "I" may be a better "picker" that way, than actually

playing my guitar? LOL! But, I guess it's better than being a "nose picker!" ;>)
