Plexi (clear) pickguards

I noticed that another guitar manufacturer of famed archtop status was putting these suckers on some of their low-end models. I have to admit...I like the concept: A clear pickguard that allows for a view of the whole body underneath.

The only downside I could see to it are scratches which might show up rather quickly on a pickguard like this.

I'm wondering if this might be the ticket for some folks who sort of sit on the fence as far as the whole pickguard topic goes....ie, you have a pickguard, but it's not obscuring, or taking away from the view of the guitar's body.

(Mebbe it's kinda like....see-through clothing! Ha!)

Funnily enough, Paul Setzer (not relations apparently) over at the Gr@&$ch forum does steady busines finishing the clear pickguards for those not happy with them. The clear guard for my 5120 is on the way back having been decaled and coloured gold. (The colour is only applied to the back of the guard in the traditional manner of the older guitars).

The clear guard seems to be a love it or hate it kind of thing and I guess there was enough feedback that the 5120 and 5122 now come with silver backed pickguards. I didn't mind the clear, I just wanted a specific look, I think the gold guard looks better on the orange body.

When I got my Casino, I didn't like the looks of the white pickguard on the natural guitar. I thought it diverted too much attention to the pickguard and not enough to the wood.

I thought about a clear plexi pickguard from "Pickguard Heaven" at Chandler Guitars, but when removing the white one to make a tracing to send to Chandler (so they could get the size right) I found a bit of dust under the PG. Although I clean and wax the guitar, I couldn't reach under the PG to clean it under there.

So I thought to myself that a clear pickguard would either be a pain in the rear to clean, or would look trashy with "dust bunnies" showing through the clear pickguard. So I ended up getting a black PG.

But that is me and my personal tastes.
