DOT, Sheraton, Riviera...

Hi Folks,

Im new to the Epiphone website community and have a few Epiphone guitars which I enjoy very much.

I have an EJ200-CE Natural - very nice best acoustic guitar ive played in a long time. The other guitar I have is a SG G-400 which is nice but its 10 years old and needs a truss rod fix as the action is rising ever so. Got a Les Paul which is nice too.

I am now looking for semi-hollow electric guitar and i've been driven towards the Dot and Sheraton, I would like a riviera especially the ones used by Oasis in the early days but they are hard to come by these days. Which leaves me with a dilema between the Dot and Sheraton. Can someone tell me the main differences between these two guitars. There is a £200 difference and I cant see much difference except from the headstock on the Sheraton with addition inlay.

Any help on this issue would be great appreicated.

Thanks,

Alan

Hello Alan, welcome aboard.

I've been looking for a semi for a while, and have played both Dots and Sherries a lot, recently.

Some people will take issue with this (but what the heck, we like friendly debate at this forum..)

Spend the extra £200 and buy the Sheraton.

The difference is in the neck...The Sherry has that lovely, slim, 3-piece maple neck. The Dot neck, well...

Plus with the Sheraton you get the neck binding...and it's a 'real' Epiphone model...I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Of course, if you have to have a Riviera:

...stick in a set of 490R/498T pickups, buy yourself an Ibanez Tubescreamer and an Orange amp. Hey Presto! Oasis.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the quick response.

I have been trying to find reviews online on both the Sheraton and Dot but couldnt find any with great detail. I did play a Sheraton at the guitar store a few weeks back, it felt nice indeed but unfortunately I didnt have time to try the Dot. I wish they made the Sheraton in Cherry, the Dot looks fab in this finish.

Thanks,

Alan

Yeah, we have a Reverb in Leicester too.

That's where I was going to recommend, if there was one near to you.

By the way,

You'll probably get along with 28v6r at this forum. He's a Weedgie too (I think)...

I hate to reply, because I haven't played the recent sheratons. Mine is 15 years old.

It came with a five piece neck. this was a big selling point for me, because in every one piece mahogany neck I've played on a

semi hollow, they bend too easy. just a little pressure and you put yourself out of tune until you ease it back.

Plus, my sheris neck is thinner and faster and easier to play. None of that big fat roundness at the back.

I also think the maple neck sounds different than the mahogany neck. It's a hard thing to say, given I've never played a sheraton with a mahogany neck. they don't make 'em.

I like the dots, don't me wrong. And I know that they sound good, and look great.

And I never was a 'bling' guy until I got my sheri.

Now, I feel differently. I really like the neck inlays, multi ply binding, bound f holes, fantastic headstock and inlays and gold hardware.

I once took it into a fender store, to try out an amp.

and the guy took one look and said. "Jesus!"

Hey that's a guy in a room full of guitars everyday. I felt pretty complimented.

I have to say +1 on the Sheri, with the dot being a very solid choice.

Putting humbucks in a casino.well.. they have dog ears.. so you'd have a bit of a problem there cosmetically.

also, you'd have the neck set deeper. take a close look.. lousy upper fret access.

Of course, that makes a difference in sound, too, somewhat.

I can't recommend humbuck pups in dog ear p90 slots.

I have p90s, humbuck size, in my sheraton, by the way. So I went the opposite direction.

Now, I think this is important.

See, I love the p90 in the neck position especially. Because it's not so darn dark and muddy as a humbuck.

And epi makes a very sweet p90. Far less reason to swap them out than one of their humbucks.

Also, I really dig them in the neck position. just an amp tweak away from humbucks, largely, and still plenty of bite!

For me, it's the fourth set of pups in the sheri, and the last.

I would easily recommend the ltd. ed. custom riviera.. as it has a bigsby and three p90s, if I thought you liked p90s enough.

I bet you'd be fine with three of them! and the price on that, if still available, was really low for all you get.

I like that blue oasis riv a lot.. gotta say so. Don't blame you for wanting that.

But overall, these, the sheri dot and riv, are much alike for wood and more.

A dot with a pearl guard would give you some oasis riv vibe.

Good luck, look long and look hard.. but in the end, I think whichever epi you choose you're going to have a very good guitar.

TWANG

did I say

sheri! *G*

The Sherri is a superior guitar to the dot. Beautiful slim neck, the craftmanship in the woodwork is much better than the dot, the binding within the f-holes are lovely and shows that Epiphone are really dedicated to the finer points on the Sheraton II. The cosmetics from body-binding to the bound neck/headstock to the lovely inlays on the headstock and fretboard leave the dot way behind. Soundwise the Sherri is much fuller than the dot and has wonderful controlled feedback.

Threads like this one make me want a semihollow guitar again...

I'm going to check out a few guitars tomorrow from the guy I got my Gibson copy from. He's got a natural PRS custom 22 copy (with bird inlays) and a Gibson Les Paul florentine copy in transparent blue... He wants 300 for the PRS, and 325 for the semihollow Paul. I'll probably end up buying both, but I can only get one right now... I was sure it would be the PRS first, until this thread reminded me how much I miss my ibanez artcore.

I just hope the quality on these is as good as on my other fake. If not, I may just put my money aside for a Sherri.
