Hiram Posted January 5, 2009 Share Posted January 5, 2009 I was looking at a review of a 2008 Gibson Les Paul on another forum and it pictured Grovers with locking knobs on the bottom of the tuners like Sperzels. TWANG Posted January 6, 2009 Share Posted January 6, 2009 They'll be standard post hole size. same as other grovers. post height is normal now. .the ones I have, old style, had longer posts, but the new ones look like regular non locking tuners. They'll fit in the epi lps.. except the lp100 or special II which don't have grovers. I can't recall right this minute.. but there may have been a change in the angle of the screw on the back.. I'd have to look it up! But I bet you can google a pic. Otherwise, dimensions are good to go on any grover tunered epi. (except casinos.. or something with kluson style tuners.. As I recall. they were like.. 75.00 list.. or 78.00 so right in the ballpark of the older models. I'll give all parts a call and beat that price if you're interested. Hiram Posted January 13, 2009 Author Share Posted January 13, 2009 I found these at Stewmac under new items, ordered a set and they came in yesterday. I replaced the Planet Wave lockers I had on my Agile 3100. The PW's worked well I just couldn't get past those black ugly posts. Anyway on to the Grovers, they don't much more than standard Grovers you have to hold one of each in hand to really feel the difference. They have a 18:1 ratio and they feel more refined gear wise than regular grovers. The posts are short not sticking up in the air like the Grover Rotomatics so you get a fairly good string break from the nut. You have to push up on the locking spindle when a bass 10 string is inserted to get the screw up action going. This is no problem but I think you might have to trim the top of the locking spindle a tad if you were putiing on a 12 or 13 bass string. They hold tune pretty well with new strings after they are stretched. Fit and finish is really nice and as I said they hold tune really well, can't ask for more than that. I get flack from a lot of people about having lockers on all my guitars but string changing is a 10 min. job and i don't have to woory about post winding or slippage. They also make a mini size of the same tuner but it has an offset mounting screw bracket. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

TWANG Posted January 14, 2009 Share Posted January 14, 2009 I recommend locking tuners all the time. Look. the quickness of the string changes is enough for me, by itself. Others feel they aren't worth the money. but I'm already struggling with string changes on my bigsby lp.. so cutting that time down is very nice. and I wish I had gotten them on my sheri, too. Duffy Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Sounds almost exactly like the Fender locking tuners I have and I love them. They have a knurled wheel on the underside of the headstock on the bottom of the tuners. They push a hardened rod straight up into the strin hole in the post from the bottom and the rod pushes the string against the top of the string hole, holding it very firmly in place. They have a satin chrome finish on the wheels with a glossy F for fender. They look really cool and cost me about 90 US including tax, but they have class; much more so than the Wilkinson locking tuners that have two string holes, 90 degrees opposed. It is hard to get the strings looking nice and clean on the first winding. The type with the wheel on the bottom and the post moving up into the string hole provide a really clean looking string winding.
