Nut for my Dot 335

Hi,

I have an Epiphone Dot and I want to replace the plastic nut on it. Does anyone know where I can find a 1.68 bone nut for sale online?? I would really appreciate any help I can get.

I believe this one will work. It's pre-slotted, too. If you Google the part number, you'll find many online dealers who sell it, as well as the manufacturer.

Those measurements are slightly different than the nut the "search by guitar" found - best thing is to measure yourself . . .

The PT-6060 is the part found by the search, although I cannot guarantee that it will fit a Dot because I have not installed one.

Still can't find any bone nuts that are the right size online. Found some tusq and graphite ones, but I would really like to get a bone one. :D

I don't think you're going to find a pre-cut bone nut. They're cut from blank pieces. Debates rage about tone, sustain, etc. regarding nut materials but there's certainly no concensus or definitive proof. Personally, I don't buy into it.

I just filed down the existing one which was far too high and also filed down the slots to lower the action . I levelled off the nut to half way up the string height when the string is laying in the final slot you are satisfied with .Frankly I just cannot see a different type making a huge difference .Most of all these fancy fandangles are just tradition because plastic just wasnt around in the early years ,not was poly ,nor was solid state ,nor was plastic wiring or modern capacitors There .I've said it ............

Well, It's actually for my Dad. He really want's a bone nut on his Dot and I was going to get one and and put it on and file it down as a Father's Day present. I'm not really sure if it will make a difference or not.

 

By the way, I had this guitar set up by a reliable guy I know, but I'm having a bit of a problem keeping the G string in tune. Anyone else experienced this? I thought a new nut might help it. The tuners are Grovers so I know that's not the problem. I adjusted the bridge also, but the G string just wont stay in tune. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

It does look like some VERY minor differences that only GraphTech could explain.

Both are listed as Epi replacements and they are VERY close. And note that the

part numbers are both P_-6060, where apparently the Q stands for Tusq and T

stands for black Tusq. I'd be comfortable ordering either one.

I was wanting to get one that was slightly longer just in case, but I found a 1 3/4 wide that I think will work. I guess I'll be going with Tusq rather than bone.

FWIW, Taylor Guitars have done a lot of testing on both nut and saddle materials and they use Tusq for both. Also, if you choose to replace a nut yourself, more than likely the slot depth will not be correct for all 6 strings. To do it right, the nut slot height above the fingerboard/frets needs to follow your guitar's specific diminsions. You might want to take it to a tech that has a set of nut files for final slot depth cutting.

 

Another FWIW. I do most of the tech work on my own guitars (I have several) and if I replace a nut, I usually use bone. Not because it sounds a lot better than Tusq, but because it seems very easy for me to work with.

 

One last note. I have a MIK Casino. One of the few things I didn't have to replaced was the nut. I replaced tuners, bridge, P/U's, and tailpiece (I put on a Bigsby). These mods were required to keep it in tune and sound like a Casino. There can be huge variability in all parts of an Epi. But once you get it sorted out and set up right, you will love it.

Ok, I got so frustrated with my Dot that I traded it in for a new black Epi Les Paul standard! lol It sounds awesome and I have no problems keeping the damn G string in tune!

 

Also is it really worth putting Gibson pick ups in place of the epi ones? I mean is it a $260 difference?
