you were right Bkitten i really cant tell from the other pics. What is that guitar you have in the natural colour next to her?

nice guitars

That's a Hofner Club 50 from 1961. Piece of garbage too. Sounds great for recording but impossible to take onto a stage - a total dog to play in every respect' date=' plus it falls apart on a regular basis. Build quality of the German Hofners back then was truly hopeless.

A closer look:

Looks pretty but don't be fooled. She's ugly once you get to know her.

Another new fan of P90's here! I have been happier with this Casino than just about any other electric guitar I have owned..... Love those screaming pickups!

i guess you can console yourself by selling it for a billion dollars. i think hofners are neat but the old ones are way too expensive. frankly, the new german ones are pricey as hell, too. the few i've played were incredible, however.

Haha Now there are all expensive. I know back in the 90s some punk artists were using old Hofs, beating them up, buying more, beating them up. Now that would cost a fortune.

The new German ones are nice. (Build quality has improved a ton.) Mine is not.

I bought mine for $400 AUS in the mid 90s which is about the price of a g310 here. All the finish has been removed from the front for some unknown reason (finish is intact on the sides and rear). The knobs are not original (the originals didn't come with it when I bought it so a friend just stuck on something similar from an old radio). Action is terrible and can't be adjusted meaningfully because of the pickup height, which also can't be adjusted meaningfully. The body splits in weird places and has already been reglued at the heel. Will not stay in tune. Tuners are crap. Feels absolutely horrible, nearly impossible to bend strings, get reasonable sustain and don't even bother trying to play fast or fluidly. Intonation is always a little out and can't truly be adjusted perfectly because of the weird bridge which only gives a few options for spacing. It has been set up professionally several times with no great improvement, and heavily modded just to get it to the point where it has the minimal playability taht it now does.

On the plus side the pickups sound great and the thing records very well, provided your fingers can stand the sheer pain and discomfort of playing it for long enough to record something worthwhile.

Maybe I'll get rid of it one day. It doesn have sentimental value though despite its many and varied faults so I'd want a decent sum for it... which would then make me feel like I'm ripping someone off blind because the thing is such a dog.

I was one of those punk artists except I didn't beat mine up. Mind you this was already pretty beat up when I got it.

Paul McCartney did a great service, and disservice, to the guitar playing world when he got famous with that 500/1. Sure, they're great sounding guitars and basses, and look pretty cool, but the vintage ones are not the best-quality instruments - which is why he was able to buy it for £30 in 1961.

I've heard good things about the modern Hofners (which seems right, with all the money Paul has brought them), and the Chinese-made Contemporary series gets good reviews. The lower-level Chinese instruments (like the Icon Bass) don't always, though.

A local store has an early-60s 500/1 I'd like to play some day... buying it would be a consideration, but I'd really have to consider it, since I could get two Contemporary basses for the same price, or spend a little more on a German-made model.

I've played the early 60's Hofner 500/1 viola basses, a guitar shop in my town has two of them, they want AUS$5000 each for them which is ridiculous for what is frankly a fragile, student-quality instrument. Clearly one is just paying for the McCartney association. Epi's copy of the viola bass is superior in every respect, including tone.
