Epiphone G-400 Reviews/Opinions?

I might have the opportunity to trade my entry level Ibanez for an Epiphone G-400 but, before I do, I was wondering if anyone here could give me their opinions of this SG?

I am just learning to play again after decades away from the instrument (basically starting from scratch) but will eventually be playing metal (New Wave of British Heavy Metal stuff like Priest, Maiden, etc.), classic rock, country, and hopefully some blues. I plan to buy an Epiphone Les Paul as soon as finances permit so that should cover off any genres that the SG doesn't but, for now, I would really appreciate any opinions anyone has of the G-400.

Thanks in advance.

I bought my G400 as a learner and its perfect, i had a sttrat copy to learn with but just didnt like at all. But ever since i got my SG i dont think ive ever put it down. Mine seems to stay in tune (rarely goes out), its quite light and sounds amazing. But thats just my opinion.

But I think you will love it.

I have had a couple G-400's, one much better than the other. My trouble came with the neck... I loved the sound, feel and everything, but could not get past the fact that the neck just felt too long. I am most used to an acoustic neck so that is likely most of it, but I have no problem finding where I am on my Casino or 24 fret Schecter C1 Plus electric. Every SG I try, I find the neck just looks too long and it screws with me as I play. Go figure.....

That said, I find the Epi G-400's to be pretty well built, some better than others. I want to say my nicer one was a Korean build, but I can't remember.

What model Ibanez are you trading for it? That would come into my decision making if I were thinking about a trade. Some of the older Ibanez Entry level guitars are still pretty sweet.

I have the Vintage G400 in Worn Brown finish. Love the guitar. The action and upper fret access are outstanding. The Alnico Classic stock pickups sound great to me. The only "issue" I have that is pretty much something you accept with a SG is the balance issue with the neck, and the neck is kind of flimsy...because theres not much neck to body contact in the joint....but SG players compensate for that. I think you will probably love the guitar.

Thanks to everyone for the info.

My Ibanez is a GRG170DX which is a great starter guitar (the neck on it is amazing). It was only built last year so it isn't one of the older Ibanez starters. I had wanted an Epi (preferably a Les Paul but perhaps a SG) but got a great deal on the Ibanez. I only paid $199 for it brand new (they normally retail for $299) so I would be more than willing to trade that for the SG.

The guy hasn't gotten back to me yet but I hope he does tonight or tomorrow. He was willing to trade his G-400 for an Ibanez, a Jackson, or an ESP. If he couldn't find a trade he was willing to sell it for $300. Based on that, I would be willing to trade him my Ibanez plus a few bucks for his SG as I figure I would still be coming out ahead financially (up here in Canada the G-400 retails for $399 and up).

So yeah, if he contacts me, if his guitar is in good shape, and if he is willing to trade I will make the deal.

I say go for it. Should be a sweet trade if it's in good shape. G-400's are great guitars for the money, especially the Korean ones. I've got two of them (a cherry-red G-400 and a G-400 Deluxe Flametop) and have no regrets.

I'm hoping the guy contacts me but, if he doesn't, I think I might either trade my Ibanez in towards a G-400 or sell it privately and then put that cash towards a G-400. Either way, as much as I have enjoyed the Ibanez (their entry level models can be really good) I've decided that I really want the SG.

So it turns out that the guy never got back to me about the trade but I've managed to work out another deal that is pretty sweet.

I bought my Ibanez four months ago for $200. Epiphone G-400s sell for $400 here. I was in the store where I bought my Ibanez today (different location, same chain) and I worked out a deal with them. I can have the G-400 for my four month old Ibanez and $200 cash. They aren't charging me any tax on the SG and are throwing in a free set-up, a free set of strings, and a free gig bag.

So basically they're giving me the full cost of my Ibanez back even though it is four months old and they're also cutting me a deal on the SG.

To me it was a no-brainer so I gave them the $200, told them to get the set-up done, and arranged to take the Ibanez in on Monday to complete the swap.

I can hardly freakin' wait to get my hands on that SG.

Thanks to everyone here who provided their opinions on the G-400...the info was much appreciated.
