Olstie
Hi everybody, I own an Epi es-175 and I'm thinking about replacing the stock elements with humbuckersized P90's (like GFS Dream 90, Duesenberg Domino or Gibson P94). Anyone thinks that's a good idea? Are there any construction issues I should take into account, or can I just replace the elements and leave the rest of the electronics unchanged? Thanks, Olstie
epidotstudio
Humbucker-sized P90s are direct replacements for most standard-sized humbuckers. There's no need to change pots or caps, or anything else. I have GFS Mean 90s in my Dot, and think they sound great.
Greasy Ivan
They will match and work fine. I've put Dream P90's on my Broadway. I've left everything else unchanged. They are excellent pick ups for their price. Still I'm thinking about replacing them again.
brianh
I've put a Gibson P94 into an LP Jr. and it was a perfect fit. They sound pretty much like dog-ear or soap-bar P90s. Plan to put P94s into my MIK Riviera (currently with full-size HBs) sometime soon.
mrbreeze
is the es 175 a "thinline" guitar?....or more thick like the jazz boxes?
brianh
is the es 175 a "thinline" guitar?....or more thick like the jazz boxes? It's a full hollow with a single florentine cutaway. It used to be the "budget" jazz guitar used by Joe Pass, Pat Metheny and the like, but these days the Gibbys go for some serious coinage, and Epi has a very nice affordable alternative: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=es-

jonnyg
Which already exists in the form of the Sorrento. Can you still buy the Sorrento? I missed out when they were available a few years back but I'd quite like to try one.
brianh
you will basicly have a single cut casino.... The ES-175 is about twice as thick as a Casino, and the increased internal air volume creates a lower resonant frequency which means it will be louder and more "full" sounding than a Casino when it's not plugged in.... twofeets
Back to the OP, I've considered more than once getting a 175 and using Allparts spacers to put in a set of real dogear P90's. Find a proper trapeze tailpiece for it and go to town... or a Bigsby, one of the flowery decals off eBay and make a replica of the rare sunburst ES295.. to go with my gold 295.
