dchale
Does anyone know if there is a difference between the Wine Red and Ebony Black Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro other than the color? Several sites have the wine red listed as a plus top with a mahogany body and a carved maple top but the Ebony Black is listed as having a mahogany body and carved mahogany top. Epiphone doesn't have any details on their site or make mention of a carved maple top. It seems unlikely to me that there would be a difference such as this since the price is the same for both colors. dchale
Well, 72 views and no answer so I'm assuming nobody knows.
rdsmith3
I am interested in this guitar, too, but there is not a lot of info on it. For example, if you go into a Guitar Center, you can see a Heritage Cherry Sunburst color that is not indicated on the Epiphone web site.
stickyfiddle
I'm happy to stick my neck out and say they're identical except the colour- both have a carved top. There are very few les paul models with a flat top, and I've never seen one with LP Standard cosmetics without a carved top
rdsmith3
I guess the question is the type of wood. Also, the link above is the only place I have seen this referred to as a "plus" top.

Well it definitely doesn't look like a plus top. And Stickyfiddle I feel pretty confident that you are correct. Every hit I find that refers to it as a plus top appears to be a direct quote of the description on Guitar Centers site. Amazon UK has it listed as solid mahogany and has the same model number listed as Amazon US which mentions the carved maple top and describes it as a plus top. But the Amazon US listing is from Musicians Friend which as we all know is owned by Guitar Center. midiman56
Carved top - YES Plus Top - NO The wine red version is actually a trans-wine finish ... really almost ox blood in color. You canb see a nice grain through the finish which leads me to believe that it is indeed a maple top ... but there is absolutely no flame or quilt to be seen. I can't really speak to what is under the paint on the ebony model. Why there always has to be so much confusion about some of these Epi models is beyond me. Who writes the copy on this stuff? Yes ... I am blaming GC and Epiphone equally for this sort of nonsense! Anyway, it's a wonderful guitar and an amazing value for the money. Here's some cell-phone pics I took of the wine red version the day we got the first one in several weeks ago: Jim

That wine red does look nice, the pics don't really show the grain you mention - I'm not doubting your word though. The high gloss poly probably makes it hard to pick up in a photo. kevin134
My understanding is that the only Les Paul with a Mahogany carved top is the Customs. Standards regardless of type should all be Maple Carved tops.(Hey, I could be wrong of course..just what I thought has been the norm..) Saw a real nice looking Walnut Les Paul at GC the other day, but I think that was a studio with a Walnut top(not a carved top though).
