HELP!!!!! Upgrading a Epiphone Les Paul

Lou

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I'm about to upgrade my Epiphone Les Paul. I wanna change tuners, bridge and pickups. I like vintage LP tone, like Jimi Page's.

I thought about Callaham ABR-1 bridge. I have no clue about the pickups and tuners.

Any suggestions?

Best regards,

Lou

Hello Lou,

Welcome to the forum.

Callaham bridge? You do have expensive taste! Do they make a metric or is the spacing the same so that you can replace bushings and all? Just curious. I understand they are very good bridges.

I presume you have or are going to replace the nut to complete it.

You mentioned the tuners. Are you having problems with them?

Sorry, can't help much with the pickups but I know there are many here who can.

hey,

welcome to the forum. As for the pickups, go to your local guitar store and fing a guitar with 57 classics in it, see if you like them.. thats what im planning to put in my paul once I get it.

57' classics are nice I have one in the bridge position in a non Gibson/Epi I own

i would recommend one of those in the bridge and a S/D Phat cat 90 in the neck.

Lou.

Gibson 57 Classic and 57 Classic Plus are a good combination of PU's for classic tone.

You could also consider Seymour Duncan JB model SH-4 and Jazz Sh-2.

If you want a full Jimmy Page guitar you will need 4 wire pickups to do the Jimmy Page wiring mod, this will also require changing your standard pots for push pull pots.

There is plenty of info on this around the web.

As far as tuners go I have Grovers and have had no dramas with them.

I have done this mods to an SG G400.

I also have an Epiphone LP with P94's in it (i did a wiring mod for a phase reversal switch) it sounds great also.

Keep us posted on all your mods, and don't forget to post photos.

Happy Hunting

I put P-94s in my epi les paul. They sould incredible! I suggest those for a good single coil vintage lp sound. (Since you can't fit P-90s in it)

+1 on the P94s, I love the sound of mine. Also check out the SD Antiquity if you want to stick with the PAF tone

I hope I'm not getting too technical so soon in a thread that is primarily discussing which components to use at this point. But I will say that the way you wire all the new electronics can have a pretty big impact on tone.

I recently had my Casino rewired, and used this wiring diagram. However, I also had my tech wire it so the volume controls were independent with the switch in the middle position. I forget how this was done, but, from memory, it's a matter of simply putting one wire on each volume pot somewhere else. Someone else will hopefully jump in here and tell you which one.

I personally think it sounds a lot better wired this way, as opposed to the usual Gibson way. The better quality electronics (CTS pots, Switchcraft jack and switch) have surely helped too, but I think it's the way it's wired that has a much bigger impact on the sound, and I don't doubt it'll sound great with a PAF style pickup too. I also used linear taper pots for the tone positions, as opposed to logarithmic/audio. It's a much more subtle roll off of treble that way I think, but you may prefer to stick with audio taper pots. And the independent volume controls are much more useful. There's always debate about capacitors, and whether their makes any difference to sound. I don't want to get into that here, but I used some fairly 'middle of the road' in terms of cost, paper in oil capactiors, and maybe they do have an impact, because it really does sound fantastic. I really urge you to try this wiring diagram with the individual volume controls, assuming you're not going with something more complex like push/pull pots.

Have you had the opportunity to play anything with the SD Antiquities in them, I was wondering what they were really like, I havent found anything out here in OZ fitted with them to try.

Have antiquities in one lp and they are really nice...very clean sounding.
