gashroff
I am hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. I acquired a CJ-165 (antique natural)last December, and it is quickly becoming my go-to guitar. I gravitate toward finger picking, but the balance and full tone of this guitar is so incredible that often I find myself strumming away. Hence my problem. The guitar (I bought it new) was supposed to have an optional pickguard in the case - mine did not. I am afraid I will mar the top while strumming and flat picking. I contacted Gibson direct (the dealer caouldn't help)and they essentially said "sorry, you lose". I know I can try to fit an aftermarket guard on it, but I really want an original. I have scoured the internet to no avail. I know Gibson still produces the CJ-165EC, and it comes with an optional pickguard. Any ideas? Does anyone on the forum have any pull with Gibson, or know of a reputable after market OEM outfit a can contact? I am not looking for a freebie, I will pay (dearly if necessary) to protect my baby. Thanks for any advise/suggestions.
Buc McMaster
I have the original tortoise guard I pulled off my 165.....but it's cut for a lefthanded guitar. I replaced mine with an ivory single-ply guard. Sent the original to have it made in the same shape and I think it's laying on the flor somewhere in my office. Gibson can make you one for a price if you can get to the right party. Maybe someone here knows who that might be..........

I know it's a lot to ask, but if you ever happen to run across your original pickguard lying around on the floor and could trace it for me.... I could have it the tracing reversed, and voila! I would gladly make it worth while for you ......

GoneTroppo
I am very sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I am in EXACTLY the same situation as the OP. What pickguard shape did the J-165 come with originally? I am hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. Dave F
I am very sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I am in EXACTLY the same situation as the OP. What pickguard shape did the J-165 come with originally? I have one that has never been used or put on the guitar, but I do not want to part with it. If you don't have any luck I can trace it for you.
bobouz
What pickguard shape did the J-165 come with originally? The earliest version of the non-cutaway CJ-165, which preceded the J-165, came with a batwing-style pickguard, very similar to that found on a non-cutaway J-185. When placed on the guitar, it covered most of the rosette. The J-165 used a much smaller guard, which fit cutaway versions as well. It was shaped like those found on many Songwriters. If you google J-165, you can check out numerous examples.
MorrisrownSal
If Dave or you trace or have a template... Send to Taylor Mullins Holter Pickguards. He will make a perfect and beautiful aftermarket. It will not have engravings though. For that there is apparently an overseas gent that euroAussie has used....
