Quick Epi Gold Top Question....

Mojo Tooth

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys....

You were all very kind in answering my first post here when I got my Gold Top and I thank you again.

I am just in love with this guitar. I haven't touched any of my other guitars for a month now!

I am wondering however about the neck pickup....it is considerably more "bassy" for lack of a better term, than the bridge pickup. I expect some variation, but this seems a bit much. Is there any way that something could be wired wrong or is this the way these guitars act?

Are the pickup heights adjustable?

I also am wondering about how the volume pots are supposed to work.

Are there different ways to wire this pickup configuration for different tones?

Thanks.

There's several links to threads on guitar wiring and pickup height adjustments in the DO-IT-YOURSELF thread pinned to the top of the Epi Lounge section, thanks to animalfarm who compiled and maintains it.

There are sooo many ways to alter the tone of pickups, my favourite is using capacitors, three mods come immediately to mind, changing the resistance value of the caps used on the tone pots, what is called a treble bleed mod, and placing a cap inline on the pickup's hot wire, the first two are already well documented. the third is explained here.

MT,

Let's take one thing at a time.

As to pickup height....hold sting down at last fret. Measure from top of the pole screw to the bottom of the string.

Neck pickup = 3/32" both sides.

Bridge pickup = 1/16" both sides

Now mind you, these are reference points. The rest is balancing them out according to your own taste.

Read the part on "Setting the pickup height".

As to physical adjustment of raising or lowering pickups: Before giving you the wrong explanation or sending you on a wild goose chase,

You said that you have a Gold Top. Does it have humbuckers in it with pickup mounting rings...or...soap bar P90s?

Next, as you will probably be asked: What kind of amp are you playing through? It has as much effect and often more

on what the guitar sounds like.

As I said, one thing at a time. RaSTuS put up some good reading for you.

Once you get the basics the way you like them, we can always discuss wiring and caps.

By the way, stock wiring is modern dependent. (the volumes work dependent on each other in the center position.)
