Open coil mini-humbuckers?

That's because a mini humbucker without a cover would fall apart. It's the cover that holds it all together. The closest you would be able to get without some serous reworking would be to make an open top cover like this.

Interesting, did you make that one yourself?

 

Is that a Les Paul style mini, as I haven't seen a Firebird mini with pole pieces?

That's not a mini. It's a BurstBucker out of a Custom Shop SG. I could make a FireBird style mini HB with an open top though.
