Advantages of CAGED system?

I got a book on the CAGED system, but I'm not understanding the advantages, particularly in relation to playing chords. But in general, I just don't understand the advantages and the book isn't explaining the advantages very well.

The two relatively pointed questions I have are:

1) How is the CAGED system better than, say, playing positions for the A minor pentatonic scale?

2) How does the CAGED system help me play chords within a scale?

Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions. The reason I have an interest in CAGED to begin with is that I want to learn to navigate the fretboard better than I can now.

It's a system of organizing the fretboard in terms of the C, A, G, E, and D chord fingerings. The Fretboard Logic series of books is based on it. It's supposed to be an organizing principle for assisting in the mastery of the fretboard.
