KrisMiller
Hey everybody. I have a chance to get a nice Gibson Custom SG Standard Historic Reissue w/Maestro, but I'm having trouble determining what year it was made. Gibson's SN# leads me to believe its an 02, but the gentleman selling it says it was made this year. Any help in determining the born on date would be awesome. Thanks SN# in question is 020392
GibSinCity
Looks like a 2002. http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/ "Gibson Custom: 1952-1960 Les Paul, Explorer, Flying V, and Futura reissues (since late 1992): M YRRR or MYRRRR M is the model year being reissued Y is the production year RRR® indicates the guitar's place production for that year. NOTE: This number includes all models for a particular reissue year - so, for example, a 1958 Reissue serial number may include '58 Reissue LP Standard and '58 Explorer production. Example: 7 5123 is the 123rd 1957 reissue model produced in 2005. 1961-1969 Firebird, Les Paul, and SG reissues (since 1997): YYRRRM Y is the production year RRR® indicates the guitar's place in production for that year. M is the model being reissued Reissue model codes: 1= SG Custom and Special 2= SG Standard 3= 1963 Firebird 1 4= 1964 Firebird III 5= 1965 Firebird V & VII 8= 1968 Les Paul Custom Examples: 050102 is the 10th SG Standard reissue produced in 2005. 030084 is the 8th 1964 Firebird III reissue produced in 2003." TattooedCarrot
Its a 2002. If it was a '12 the SN# would be 120392 The first two digits of the SN# indicate the year the guitar was made. The last digit represents the year being reissued. The middle three numbers are the production sequence of that model for that year. Also, the 2002 would have the larger orange paper certificate and a 2012 would have the newer small black book style. I just sold an '02 myself last week, below are its SN# and certificate. Tim Plains
I haven't been keeping up with these and their serial numbers. 2000 and 2010 both had the same 00xxxx serial number I know because my 2010 '68RI LPC has a 00xxxx s/n. Any chance they continued this into 2011 and 2012?

Any chance they continued this into 2011 and 2012? You're right, I stand corrected. I just checked the Music Zoo's site and they have new '11 and '12 models that have 01XXXX2 and 02XXXX2 for the SN#'s. In that case, it all comes down to the type of certificate - large orange paper if its an '02 and small black book if its a '12.
StijnV
yes, interesting; I'll double-check with the Custom Shop.
StijnV
Custom Shop says that there is nothing that keeps a historic serial number from potentially repeating itself in 1992, 2002 or 2012. It is in fact the nature of it ! Heading for 2022
BobB
That style of COA would be consistent with the type that came with Custom Shop models built between 2001 and 2007.
