Grolschke
So I got an offer to buy a Gibson ES-335 from 1999. But I'm not sure if it's real because the price is kinda low (€380). So what do you guys think? Buy or not buy?
JimR56
No photo of the front of the headstock? A 1999 is not a "vintage" Gibson, so you're in the wrong forum. At any rate, I see things there that don't look right.
Grolschke
Yeah sorry, didn't know where else to post it. Only got this picture of the head. But what is it that doesn't look right?
Work in Progress
Now I don't know if this is the way it should be or not, but my observation was that the binding on the body doesn't match the color of the headstock binding. The headstock binding seems to be more aged than other areas. Also, I can't find the serial number format this guitar is following. That doesn't mean it's fake, it probably just means I'm being dumb
jedzep
Can't you search out ES 335 pics on the idiotnet?

You should probably try posting it here also: http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/forum/11-hollow-and-semi-hollow-body-guitars/ I'm not really as knowledgeable about modern Gibsons, so I should probably let others help you with this one. To me, the pickguard, the cutaway shapes, and the finish on the back of the head look unfamiliar for a Gibson. For whatever that's worth. Good luck, I hope it turns out to be right, and you get a good deal and enjoy the guitar.
kaicho8888
Is it suppose to be a '99 Gibson ES-335? The following are why I doubt it's a Gibson: Headstock binding does not flow together with the neck binding...usually no headstock binding. Back of the headstock does not show wings glued on but appears as one piece. Is it MOP logo and icon...it looks like decals from the picture. Frets do not have the nibs; unless it's been refretted. Serial number is not impressed in wood and instead it's painted. Screw on the mounting rings should be black flat philips and slotted PU height adjuster. Bridge looks metric...larger bolt Toggle switch should have knurled nut and not hex nut. Binding on F holes is not done on this model. Pickguard is not 5 ply and appears to not have the right shape with the right bevel edges.Pickguard support should not be a flat bent bracket. Sorry, but this guitar is clearly a fake.
