Rosewood Pickguard

I am wanting to replace the pickguard on my J180-EC with a rosewood model.

To match with bridge and pins already installed. Anyone know of a good dealer for these?

I have seen several on the internet but not sure of which to use. Most pricing I have seen range from $40

to $50. Some advertise "rosewood" and some "rosewood veneer". I also would like to know if any

change in tone can be expected. Any help would be appreciated, dealer to use etc...

I can't say for sure, but I doubt that Rosewood vibrates at the same rate that Spruce does, so I would guess that would change the tone in some way. I would think the level of tone difference would depend on the size and thickness of the pickguard.

yeah that makes sense...essentially you are stacking another wood type on top of the spruce...i think any change in tone will be nominal...do they make spruce guards??

What you describe' date=' in general at least, has been done before!

 

Here's an ebony 1993 J-180 "Artist" model with the pickguard in rosewood, and I believe this was how this edition was made, straight from the factory.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't clever enough to get a picture of the whole actual guitar, so here's the front end too:

 

I've had those pix since 2001, so I expect that was from some store's website.

 

You could likely get a luthier to cut you a rosewood guard in that or whatever shape you wanted. If you went to Gibson through your dealer of course, I think you could expect to pay several pretty pennies, and prolly a few pretty dimes for it. You can always ask though -- nuthin wrong with that!!

These are the ones I have looked at so far.

 

I think the rosewood guard would make the guitar standout more.

Already has rosewood bridge and the Gibson rosewood/dot pins.

But the black finish on the J180EC along with the stock black

guard is a little to much IMO.

 

The rosewood pins I installed recently added a softer tone unplugged

or through a PA, really like it.

Thats what I am talking about shrimer...Looks nice. I am going to have the

guard cut a little different than stock size but not much bigger. So I guess in

a few weeks I will be looking for the thread I saw months ago about

replacing the guard...

I wonder, does a plastic pickguard vibrate at the same rate as the Spruce top?
