This site is slower than death on stilts.

I live in a rural area and the ONLY choice I have for internet is dialup. The satellite towers are on the other side of a ridge, cable TV stops about a half mile down the road, we have satellite TV but I refuse to pay several hundred dollars for HughesNet (or whatever it is) as there is no guarantee that will work here either. The reason I'm pointing this out is just to show I'm not living in 1996 by choice.

When I go to this site, one of two things can happen: Either I have time to go read the newspaper before it loads, or else it freezes my computer up to the point I have to go into task manager and kill off iexplore.exe. That is, if I can get into task manager at all.

This is pretty much the only site that causes this much trouble. The old site had some nasty issues, but at least I could go to it. What exactly is IN this freakin' site that takes so long to load?

It amazes me that in all other aspects of technology, the trend is smaller, lighter, cheaper, easier to use......

.....except anything having to do with web sites. Make them big, heavy, bulky, complicated, erratic... all to say there are pretty graphics and cute little avatars.

If anyone would like to be a millionaire by Christmas, develop software that scans the html content of the site you're going to, and eliminate background crap, animated gifs, etc, so us cavemen can go on the internet as well. Then if we want full graphics, bells and whistles, we just click a tab saying "show full version" or something. I know some sites have the option of "text only" and that's kinda what I mean.

A couple things...

One: This site is tiny compared to most other sites out there. There isn't a bunch of ad's and cookies on here, so it SHOULD load up super fast - even with dial up.

It sounds like you may have some issues, since you state that you can't get to Task Manager.

It REALLY sounds like you're loaded with spyware, which will not only slow you down to a crawl, but keep you from getting to task manager.

Lastly, there are settings within IE that allow you to load pages without graphics if you so choose.

Maybe you can get something faster down your phone line. I switched over to DSL through the phone line from AT&T a few years ago. I was further down the wire than they recomended for the service, but I decided I wanted to give it a try anyway, and talked them into it.

At first I did have some constant problems, but once I was signed up as a customer, they pretty much went out of their way to figure out and solve the problems. When I got a actual technician on the phone, after a few conversations, all the problems went away. I've been streaming nicely ever since.

Hey ksdaddy--

Although I have DSL, I sometimes notice that this site loads appreciably slower than other sites, and I sometimes have problems posting responses to threads. Both of these issues suggest to me that there are some bugs in the site or Gibson's server settings that cause the load time to slow down. I have noticed that other sites--the Telecaster Discussion Pages and the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum--both recently altered their own server settings to speed up load times.

Short version of that statement: I think you are right that something in the Gibson site causes slower loading, and this is odd because we have many fewer members surfing the forum at any time than do the sites I mentioned above. Heck, we often have fewer people posting and reading than does the Larrivee site, so we should be zipping through our loading times! (And I say that as a happy Larrivee owner, folks, but hey, the Larrivee forum should not have more members actively involved than the Gibson forums just based on the ownership numbers--but it does.)

Two thoughts: one, you can help with your loading times by removing your own avatar, which is a photograph and so takes up more bandwidth than you might expect. Second, let me know what browser you are using. I have a Mac, and I use the Camino/Mozilla web browser, and there are scripts that can be downloaded to block your browser from loading pictures, gifs, ads, etc. I right now only see about 5% of all advertising on the web, and I even block out some website graphics here and there, and it makes a huge difference. Maybe I can find something similar for your browser.

Last note: if you don't have it, you should get some spyware detection/deletion software. It also will help with the speed of web browsing.

Hope some of that helps.

Ignatius

Maybe you should pause the porn downloads while you're trying to log on?

Would you like to elaborate on that statement? I didn't find much humor in it' date=' if that's what you were attempting.[/quote']

Then you need to get to the local mechanic for a sense of humor tune-up!

Shoot, no offense intended. I just know what works for me. :-$
