  1. Saw The Dixie Dregs last night at The Carolina Theater in Durham, NC. Killer venue. Really small theater. The Steve Morse Band opened. The Dregs did about 2 minutes of Jessica before they launched into Cruise Control. In my wife’s words about the show “that was amazing”.

Here is a link to the set list.

We are seeing Dweezil there in September.

But remember this.  They weren't modes and scales to him.  They were notes.  2nds and 9ths, 6ths and 13ths, 4ths suspended beyond suspension.  There is major tension as well as minor tension, this is where he lived, major tension and relief.  Lots of jazz in that country boy.  Lots of mistakes too, you only had to see them a few times to catch a bad night or a bad romp through one of their best.  Sometimes he just didn't hit the note(s), and you could tell, he didn't hide it at all.  But rhythm.  Man, that guy could comp behind anyone at anything, just one or two times through Blue Sky and you would see a man happy to play behind Warren or Jack Pearson.  The live one from the late 90's, An Evening With The ABB, man, that Blue Sky is just a lesson in how to play that song by the guy that wrote that song.  Just incredible to listen to that, a joy to see him do it.  Holmel NJ, 4 or 5 times or so in the late 90's they did Franklin's Tower into that one and he was perfect each time.  Joyous, the only word I got.  Him and a couple chords, his shoulders and Butch following his shoulders, Jaimoe following Butch, Oteil following both of them, it was magic sometimes.

"We gotta long way to go this evening so if you don't hear what you wanna hear well, that's just tough.  This is an old song called BLUE Sky..."

    I could just cry.

I saw and met Jack in Nashville. He plays a few times a month at an old converted train station. The night I saw him he played Elizabeth Reed, he might have done another ABB song, I had a few beers in me. He definitely played Reed.

Classic movie - great line was   "The new phone book is here!  The new phone book is here!''  He thought he'd reached fame and fortune because his name was in print.  I don't think they bother making phone books anymore.  Last one we received was only an inch thick and plastered with ads for lawyers. Even on the cover.

It was so funny when he left home and on the first day he made it as far as the end of the fence.

The one that looks like an 000-28 is a custom with cherry back and sides and maple binding. Otherwise same specs as an 000-28. It’s called The Cherry Hill

    My pants just got tight.

The best answer is going to be to play them and decide yourself

That of course is the best advice, but one has to have a store near by and that store has to have ever model he wants to try. You may get the first one, but there’s no way you’re gonna get the second one.

EM, mine is a 2020 Heritage Artisan Aged 535 in Ebony. The pickups are Seymour Duncan Seth Lover SH55s. It’s a warm classic bucker sound. I love it. It has a nice classic sound; sometimes I get Gretsch-y tone out of it… like compressed old POCO, and sometimes just some good slightly driven blues. Warm blues.  And it has a nice fat clean tone as well.

i don’t go on any electric forums, because that’s just a rabbit hole I don’t need! I also have a Mexican tele that does its job. But the Heritage is great. I went in with the aim of buying a translucent red ES335, and this one sounded just as good, but it was used, so I saved a few bucks.

You can see it on the end here.

My buddy has a Heritage ES-335 clone, he told me it’s the one guitar he would run into his house for if it was on fire.

What are the 2 Martins? One looks like a D-15, and one looks like a 000-28.

  7. Probably most Gibson’s are going to be easier to play just because of their scale length at 24.75”. Now they do have some stuff that’s longer than that. Martin dreads are 25.4”, and most Martin 00 and 000’s are 24.9”. The oddity being the 000-15 at 25.4”. Remember shorter scale means less tension to tune it to concert pitch. Not sure what scale Guilds are. I think a lot of nylon Spanish guitars are 25” or so.

    Sheepdog1969,

You are asking an open-ended question which will result in as many different suggestions as replies.

You would be better served visiting music stores and playing instruments that fit the parameters you've set.

    Good luck on your quest.

  9. It depends on what sound you want. I’m known as the Martin guy, but the best IMHO acoustic I ever played was a Preston Thompson. Now to get one, there are no entry level models, and you’re gonna drop 5k minimum for the least expensive one.

You want the Martin sound or the Gibson thump or something different? I used to love Dreads and still do, but they are just too big for me. I like 000 size guitars.

I was born in a log cabin  I helped my father build.   As you can see from my avatar,  I've got nothing else to contribute here.  Had a nice avatar, but it disappeared during some system update.

Steve Martin’s character in the Jerk was born a poor black child. It killed me when he found his special purpose.
