Yes, that's correct for the Les Paul Standard although I understand that some were coloured as "Darkburst's"  whereby they used a darker colour than the red to hide any defects in the Maple tops.

Some did leave the factory Black as special orders but apparently they just sprayed Black paint over the sunburst!

Thanks for the confirmation. Yes I was focusing on the Standards. I know there were the Customs “Black” Beauties. But wait, they just sprayed Black over a Burst? Holy….

Too many mods to know what you have, and the pics are not good enough to spot the usual red flags

also, it looks like a 3 pc maple cap, which also casts some doubt in my mind.

but hey,, I'm not an expert,, may be ok.

check the truss rod, and see what is needed to adjust the neck.   A 5/16 hex wrench is the right answer

There are a lot of mods for sure. I’m leaning more towards it being a real one. But I’m only going based on the serial number year (1981) and that chainsaw case with that orange/brownish interior seems to be of that time period. The headstock looks real (based on the shape), however in the late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s the lawsuit guitar game was on point….In my opinion, it’s real….

Woah that’s an amazing collection! Congrats on your NGD!

Almost every single part of a reissue model will be different than the standard production models but that’s not to say theres anything wrong with the standard production models. Looks like you got a great guitar and I really like those acoustics too

Thanks for your comments. I love my acoustics too. I really want an Elvis Presley Dove. Gibson stopped making them in the early 2010’s as the Presley Estate and Gibson did not renew/sort out the licensing. I would love that to add to the collection. Do you have any Gibson Acoustics? Most people I know have one solid J-45 and that’s enough for them….

yea man..  do it, love to see it

Mine is a 2016, the flame is not as impressive on mine, I've seen some real killer backs too, yours sounds like it has one,

but I Iove the guitar,  it's just about  perfect really.   the are special instruments in my book.

    nice gibson collection,

what year is the J200 from?

congrats on the LP, it's a beauty.

That’s a 2009 Standard. Oh the flame on the back of that guitar is one of the best I’ve seen. I’ll try and get a pic later….

Okay but I'll still give you a chance to come to your senses.

Don’t worry….I’m keeping it for a long while. The top is beautiful. I was actually going for a 1974 Les Paul Custom Ebony before I got this one. But once I saw the top, I caved….

I like the wood grain on that one, if you ever think about selling it don't.

I won’t be any time soon….That’s what made me buy it in the first place was the top. My main electric is my $800 1994 Peerless Epiphone Casino (not pictured) I bought in 1997 when I was a kid….I saved up all my money for that one. It’s been with me in my very first gigs and pubs. Even though I can buy premium Gibson’s now, the first guitar you put your blood, sweat and tears into getting will always be your first love….

If I do decide to sell my LP in the future, I’ll let you know first….

  8. You don’t need many picks! Just the right one. D’addario’s Keith Urban Medium Picks is what I use. It will give you all 3 tones you are after.

    1) Warm - Use the rounded side of the pick

    2) Bright - Use the regular pick tip end

    3) Grit (Distortion) - Use “The Edge” or dimple side of the pick

Construction wise, a reissue is supposed to be closer to how things were done in the 50s then the USA counterpart. The reissues will have long neck tenons, more vintage-like pickup (custombucker), slightly different plastics, fit and finish, lighter woods… all things the reissue differs with the USA. Both are great guitars but one is Custom Shop made and the other is made in bulk so to speak.

Anyhow congrats on the new LP. Pics or it didn’t happen…

OK….Fine. I’m sure you can tell the LP from the rest….

  10. It took a very long time, but at the start of this month I finally acquired my 1st Les Paul. Anyways, mine is a 2019 50’s LP Standard (Tobacco Burst). What is the difference between say a Murphy Lab ‘59 and a 50’s Standard LP, besides the relic job and the truss rod cover? What exactly is a 50’s LP Standard? It it a blend of an R8 & R9 neck profile?

    Thanks in advance

  11. I have an ES-355 VOS ‘59 Antique Ebony with Bigsby. I put on “witch hat” knobs to make it resemble a ‘74 Ebony Les Paul Custom. The knobs you have are nice, but you could put on black & gold numbering “witch hat” knobs. It will look good on the with the black guard and natural finish you got on there….
