    Ha!

I just thought - if they sold this Waterloo with the V neck a few years earlier, I doubt you lot would ever have heard of me!

It is not gigantic but just a nice handful! For fingerpicking 1 3/4" nut 2 3/8" bridge space!

I mean you can tell just looking at it!

    Chief,

Your comment brings up an interesting point: what happens to a guitar like this one which is returned and is not pristine, and in fact has sustained damage?

    RBSinTo

Generally, they head to Australia with the special no warranty, no return deal! 😁

I can tell you SBP, after a number of years of seeking my preferences, that you are in a minority... most people prefer slimline. Which is why Gibson, Martin, Taylor, Maton et al make...slimline.

But every now and then someone does something else for their main guitars to trick ya.......Waterloo and a big surprise to me was the Taylor Builders Edition 717E necks - a chunky 'compound carve'. And my Waterloo necks are almost identical to my old 35 Gibson archtop....

Yep, the rest are special order editions etc.

    I'll have it, ZW!

Well, it all goes to show that you should....ha...ha...try the guitar out before you by it!

But I will guarantee you that by feel alone, my three 00 size Maton 808s of different series and woods will have EXACTLY the same measurements! I measured my Messiah 808 and it is right on spec. I think they have one guy very strictly making the same neck over and over! I rang to ask about getting a wider nut etc, and not even their Custom Shop would do it. Nope, this is the neck ya get....!😁 (might be different if that Tommy fella rings them!)

I had a bit too much done to the J50 to tell - it was horrid before - the nut and saddle were done at home by an amateur, slots high and too low, saddle way high leaning over, frets sharp from no humidity, bow in the neck etc, etc.

The Man is just magic,it plays wonderfully now, still a whisker high but avoided a reset and I am running mediums (Elixirs PBs). Anyway, not complaining about the bigger neck, nut and saddle - just ideal for fingerpicking a dread - if I had begged Gibson to make me one just like it, they probably wouldn't!

BUT, the 2005 Dove I got from the same secondhand /pawn shop has the B string thing exactly as you mention - next to go for a haircut! Some nit has filed the E string area right down to lower the string but went WAY too far! Plastic anyway - has to go but the Man is very, very busy with all these guitars everyone has bought!

So, yesterday I was playing my 2002 Gibson J50, previously unloved and mistreated by someone else, but last year it got a new bone nut, saddle, full setup, bridge ramped, Anthem pickup, ...humidipaks....and it is now playing great!

So fingerpicking away, I thought to grab the vernier and see why this guitar is different from other standard modern Gibson acoustic specs online....

So the neck is fatter than recent models, the nut is wider and the bridge spacing is wider! I think Gibson went 'slimmer' in about 2007/8?

    Nut: 44.15mm; (1.7380" or 1 47/64")

    Bridge Spacing: 56.05mmm (2.2065" or 2 13/64")

Aha! - way wider than usual - it is almost the same as my Matons! A bee hair wider!

Trying to get better photos yesterday...

A lot depends on what you want to do....do it for fun, experience? Open Mic? Going on the road?

Sal said the K&K and the (Baggs M1 Passive) - both are good but you need to take the preamps (your new friends) with you. (everywhere!).

Next would be the Baggs Anthem - fully self contained, great sound, but expensive and has battery and stuff in your guitar.

And on upwards it goes until you spend large amounts! Have a peruse of the Acoustic Guitar Forum Amplification section....

I like all the different opinions on the different forums, but it does do your head in!

Nothing to do with guitars but I live between what I call Shark Bay and Snake Mountain.......where years back, the opinion was to 'kill everything before it gits ya' but recently is to 'let them all sort themselves out'....and I saw yesterday a 'Shark Alert' on a local emergency services app (handy to look up before you venture out on the roads sometimes)........ So there have been 3 dead whales wash up recently on the coast in widely distant parts of my state.

Number one landed on a bit of prime real estate, akin to a bit of Beverly Hills on the ocean. The dead whale got dragged in, chopped up and hauled away within minutes....can't have the golden beach affected.

Number two landed on the shore of the area where the town council has been charged with all kinds of things and removed after charging rates and taxes on land that has been declared 'flood zone' and the hordes that bought the land can't build holiday houses on it! Huge fuss. Whale got left on the beach to rot away to bones and attract sharks all summer! "'Shark Alert' on the app!

Number Three rolled in yesterday to an area not too far away from me that I love driving past on their coast road! For comparisons, I would say it was "very quietly rich Laurel Canyon-ish on the beach'........

Now they are gathering opinions to see what they will do to the whale...and it is like watching a thread on the guitar forums!😲

Edit: Oh yeah, I meant to mention...the first one was on the TV news and media, huge fuss -  and the other 2...... zip, just the emergency Shark Alert app thing.

Update for you on the whale situation....

As in the way of the world, number 3 dead whale from the very affluent beach area has been quietly hooked up and towed out to sea with not a mention in the (big) media.....

Number 2 dead whale has the townspeople of the poorer area crying out that the dead whale is a stinker and can be smelled all over town and up to 5 miles away! And people have been said to be cutting off pieces of blubber and taking it!

    Hi everyone,

I'm currently talking with the dealer to see what can be done. Right now I'm inclined to return it and get a new one (or at least see if the dealer is willing to make some adjustment on the price of the guitar). As I said, I'm not usually picky and I can get some lacquer imperfections, uneven bindings and that kind of stuff that comes from the work made by hand. This on the other hand seems like an issue with the rosewood of the board that has been masked with some filler (something I would be ok if it was a second hand guitar, but not on a new one)

Some more pics where you can see it's the rosewood filled.

Looks like my Telecaster after the sax player knocked the drummer’s cymbal and stand over and cut a hole in the neck!

Up close, that new photo looks like the fretboard is laminated or something and when bumped or hit a section of lamination has broken off.....

Send it back, they are not a rare guitar. Could be an honest mistake but who knows?

    Back again..

Saturday Morning 11.12am here, warm and really humid, just finished my ‘Saturday Morning C Blues capo 3’ practice.

Weapon of choice this morning: Waterloo WL-14L ladder braced, and I think I just found out it likes it humid! Oh yeah! When the guitar just ‘kicks in’ when you play, you just go above yourself. I couldn’t have ruined the moment by trying to record it, but just rolled with it instead.

For this playing style, the ladder Waterloo is just perfect, alternating bass sounds right, trebles cry out if pushed but are very melodic if played quieter. I mention this because some guitars of mine don’t work out, though great for other stuff.

Joy of multi guitar ownership is comparing the same tune on different guitars! Could drive you crazy, aha ha hah ha......

Yes, just played it for an hour....

What I said is not about cost or buying a nice guitar...there sure are plenty of those around ready to buy.

Nope, this was made FOR ME!

It has some foibles, sure, but it like a perfectly comfortable pair of shoes. And you can play it!

There is an emotional connection with the builder that you don’t get buying off the rack, perhaps more on my side than the builder......just another one he made, to him. To me, very special.

But you need to have played a fair amount of different guitars to decide what you want.

I don't have any vested interest, no allegiances.....

While I really love some of my guitars, if a Big Voice of some description said I can only have one guitar, well.....I get asked this a lot - there can be no choice - it will be my hand made (for ME!!!!) Cargill custom 00 deep body (sort of Nick Lucas shape) made of exotic woods - Gabon Ebony with Italian Spruce top, mahogany neck made to my spec - a smoothed out copy of a Martin Mod V with 1 3/4" nut  and 2 3/8" bridge spacing, ebony board, ebony bridge, Schaller M6 machines with ebony buttons....all set up to play beautifully by a master - James Cargill! And recently he installed the pickup system of my choice - the K&K Trinity Onboard system...K&K with a mic and preamp in the guitar.

But I really enjoy reading about and trying all the different addictive potato chips!

My Black Pearl pictured below, impossible to photograph gloss black top with Nikon on auto! And made harder by the Gibson forum not liking Imgur photos pasted direct anymore - had to paste in another forum and copy to here!:

    Thanks RB!

For those interested in the why and how of the guitar playing, it is improvising around and within a basic form - lead guitar with chords added but fingerpicked - I can play it all afternoon but don't ask me to do that one exactly the same again......😁

If you want some tips for the playing style, perhaps look at David Hamburger acoustic blues.....but it may not be 'instant':

    Found it!

The moderator on UMFG, Buck has the serial numbers and the one where martin  (quietly) started using Sipo on the CEO7s instead of Honduran Mahogany!

S/N 1858139, if you are interested. Honduran looks like...mahogany, but Sipo is a bit stripey, Sapele stripey as well. My mahogany is absolutely beautiful but you can take my word for it because the glossy back makes it tricky to catch it on camera.

Where I live we don't play before we buy. We put it back on the truck after a couple days, especially with Guitar Center, which just sends a return label for easy refund.

Got two 30's L00s and the 0018. Somehow, I think I have that tone territory covered.

My deep well pump died yesterday. 1800 bucks to replace. All I can afford right now is a couple new Red Bear picks.

They won't send you the good stuff, just the wobbly necks! You got to get in there and kick and scratch for the good one! And sometimes you need to be there as it comes in!

    Bad luck with the pump...

Play before buy, JZ - if you like the neck of your 00-18, you will NOT like the Mod V.

That said, the Mod V on my CEO7 is slightly smaller than the supposedly same neck on my Martin EC! By intent, no idea?

P.S. read some history too - mine is Honduran mahogany from the first flush but the guitars kept selling and they swapped to different mahoganies..Sipo and Sapele and...one with a K.....

    Thanks!

My Martin CEO7 is a great fingerpicker! AND it had a great setup fairly recently, but most importantly for this recording - it had a K&K Trinity system installed when getting the setup.

So, yesterday - I finished work, had 3 or 4 different RSIs (computer related Repetitive Strain Injuries), took the dog to the riverbank to throw the ball a few times, came home, made coffee. Over the back fence and one along a pool is being dug, I think, tractors and of course, loud radio...on the other side the kids are playing gangster rap flat out window shaking volume through their home stereo - and at home, the Better Half is ensconced in the exact middle of the house doing work meetings on her laptop all day, all week...

So we take the coffee to the music room feeling a  bit unsure of what I was going to do...grabbed the CEO7, plugged in to the Tonedexter and mixer, grabbed the headphones and played for an hour just like that, experimenting with the sounds a bit. Then I thought - "This is sounding good, I will record it!"

The Matrix Infinity is a great pickup. I used them for a decade or so until I was very kindly gifted a Sunrise by Buc and had my head turned forever by the world of mags. I found the Infinity into the Fishman Aura 16 pre to be a genuinely great sounding rig. I prefer the unplugged tone of my guitars sans UST, and don't miss sorting the string balance issues that were always present at installation, but tonally they were-and are-very good. Even without the Aura they're still more than capable of holding their own.

    Hey Jinder!

    Doing ok?

The Tonedexter is a more modern version of the Aura, except you make your own sounds with a mic then save them. The ‘special people’ use to get their Aura custom sounds done at Fishman in a similar way but the rest of us got what they gave us!

I have the Anthem in a couple of guitars (and a box of all the pickups I have tried and buyed....😶

The Anthem is just the Baggs Element undersaddle plus their TruMic on the bridgeplate to give some ‘real’. I like it, BUT, I have experimented with turning the TruMic off and making a Tonedexter sound with just the undersaddle and I like the sound way better. Smoother, more ‘real, like a mic recording.

But the best ones with Tonedexter so far are plain old K&Ks. And no gouging of undersaddles etc. (Tonedexter has notch and feedback filters for the loud guitarist, though the Sunrise like Jinder’s is pretty feedback proof, except it doesn’t fit in a lot of my small body guitars...)

You must be right about lag time for getting posts. It's just past 5:30 PM here, east coast.

Yep, 16 hours ahead here at 11.07 am Saturday morning and played a quick run through of my C Blues mentioned above on my 1937 L-0, sounded fab, but strings had to go...so a new set of lights Elixir PBs are done! What do normal people do for the fear/excitement equivalent of B and E string replacement. And of course the B and E tuners are tight while the rest are normal! All done but for some calmer fun like running in front of cars.....

Err derrrrrrr. When I grabbed the new strings out of the bag from the music shop, I notice they are 12-56, not the 12-53 Lights I asked for! So the EC must have got 12-56 last week.......probably why it is...................😐

    BluesKing777.

  22.

So, Saturday morning 9.15am here.....thinking out aloud......

Every Saturday morning, I have mentioned before, I run through an hour or so of ....blues in C with capo 3. See, poet and don’t know it.

So it is best to get at it before the locals drag out their lawn mowers and assorted machinery.

Selection of weapon/s........I want to play the EC because I just bought it, but honest, I have better blues in C capo 3 players! (think Railroad Bill in C or things like John Hurt.). Which leads to the conclusion after 2 weeks of ownership that the Martin EC probably has too many overtones for this type of blues, too much sustain. ......and I will first up today, play my Gibson L-0 or a Waterloo WL-14.

I wonder if EC himself would pick this guitar from all the choices available today? 90s, the small body was a bit unheard of....... Now...everywhere!

Off to play something because the locals drown me out, followed by a string change on the L-0!
