Would love to see a pic of your R7 Custom LP (BB).

I like Grovers too but I thought I would add the Wafflebacks as those are period correct for the 72 LPC.

One thing to note is the Grover tuner hole cannot be reused for one of the waffle back tuner holes. I filled the tuner hole and had to re-drill. Glad the tuner body was able to cover the rework.

I shared a pic of all my RIs a few times.  I have an R7 GT, R7 BB, 2x R9s, and a 68RI Custom.  Either way, will post something when I get the chance.

  2. I have an R7 Custom LP (BB).  I believe the year is 2003...  Either way, really like it with the solid mahogany body, 57 Classics, baseball bat neck, and of course all the typical LP historic specs for construction and such of the era.  The absolute nicest ebony board I have ever seen in my life is on this guitar - smooth as glass.

It came this year I believe with gold Grovers, but really liked the waffle-back tuners.  I haven't changed these out as Grovers are great tuners, but again, aesthetically, I like the waffle-backs more.

Well @NighthawkChris, you helped a lot!

Helped so much that I brought this beautiful lady home!
    NGD for me today!

It's in great shape, original frets with no dents at all, barely played, just a few scratches...
After some cleaning and setup, I'll post some pics.

Thanks for sharing! She is a special one. You will have a hard time finding that one if you ever let it go. Anyhow congratulations! Hope for many years of enjoyment 😀 It’s a beautiful Nighthawk!

  4. LOL, I remember that episode too...  I have never considered in my life going to a pawn shop to sell - and to come up good on the deal.  People who want money from a pawn shop I have to believe are more desperate for the money than someone who knows what they have, then try to make the best avenue to get the most value for a transaction.

I liked the comment on the link shared above.  Someone congratulated Mark for locking up a guitar that will do nothing else than collect dust.  Here it is:

"And, this is what I really don't like...manufacturers which repurchase instruments and put them in a "vault" where they shall never be enjoyed or played again by human hands. Good job, Mark!"

lol!  Iconic!!!  I can't wait to have them anal-yze this guitar and sell a replica/reissue for $50k.

  5. Thanks everyone!  Really excited about this pool.  I am expecting this to happen in a week or so.  I have been busy getting all the "miss dig" markings in the yard so no accidents hopefully.  I have all the parts for the pool on a couple of pallets in my garage, so very soon approaching this build date!  It's going to be a bit involved when all is said and done as I have to worry about electrical of course for the filtration, but I also need electric AND gas for a pool heater to hopefully extend the seasonal usage here in MI.  So yeah, expecting a ripped up yard as some trenching is going to happen, but geez, grass is not hard to grow.  Well, easy if you don't have a dog - like I do - that does his "stuff" with "new" things we do for the yard, haha!  Anyhow, really appreciate the sentiments here, hoping to share some photos of the build when it's ready for showtime.

  6. Indeed @jdgm this is a 1994 indicative that the first 2 digits are 94 - the Gibson centennial year haha! I’d snag that one up if I had the chance. Congrats on the find OP!

That’s a fancy one… heritage cherry… there are a few of these from that era that deviates from the “standard” finishes. I’ve seen goldtop, wineburst, chocolate something or other… how HC! Again, no brainer, get it!

To be more specific about the guitar in question, that is surely an ST-3 - 3-pickup Standard have you.  I can tell just by looking at inlays as the "variants" have this detail different between each of them.  Usual finishes are as such:

    SP-3 (3-pickup Special) - dot inlay

    • solid cherry
    • solid black
    • vintage sunburst
    • (rare) fireburst

    ST-3 (3-pickup Standard) - parallelogram inlay

    • vintage sunburst
    • translucent amber
    • fireburst

    CST-3 (3-pickup Custom) - crown MOP inlay

    • antique sunburst
    • translucent amber
    • fireburst

These are the "standard" finishes you'd typically find.  Again, some 1994 builds were deviating from this - like in 96/97, you might find some with Schaller (Floyd-licensed) tremolos.  I didn't have interest in the 2009 and later reissued types - were not the same as the 90s.  But pay attention to the S/N when it starts with "94".  Gibson screwed with us all this year, haha!

There are 2-pickup versions of the NH too, but the finishes are generally the same between the 3 and 2 pickup variants.  I only like the 3-pickup variants TBH.  Much more Strat-Tele like.  Not that the 2-pickup is bad, just that YMMV.

My personal favorite is the fireburst CST-3.  I am a sucker for the Gibson triburst/fireburst guitars...  it's a weakness I can't overcome!

  7. Because how old I am, I was exposed a little to the GD. During my teen years in the 90s, we had  Phish - sort of a jam band for those not familiar. It wasn’t my scene at all, but people at the time talked about them as some sort of GD-like band. A lot of “hadn’t had a bath in a few months” stoners liked Phish. Just my experience…

When I went to college I had an older colleague I played guitar with that really loved Dylan and GD. It was hard for me to get into GD, but liked the Dylan stuff quite a bit. I played keyboards with him as he played guitar and sang. I learned a lot from my old bud - musically. Taught me all about how chords work - scales + intervals to make 7,9 etc chords.

Sort of getting back, if it were a choice of GD vs Phish… GD all the way. I think Phish sucks. Sorry if this offends anyone. I know some people if I met them today that couldn’t handle it 😆

  8. @kidblast yeah working in IT has its challenges I’d imagine. At my work, they have to make sure we are locking down stuff because the stuff we work on is restricted by things like ITAR. I sure wouldn’t want to have that responsibility - scare me something nasty. Our machines are so locked down we can’t even change desktop icons without putting in a ticket. They also maintain the usual datacenter where we store our code repos and such. Yet another thing that would scare me to have that responsibility. Wouldn’t want to be the guy who screws up all the engineering storage for the projects and such… so hats off to you, hope it’s something you enjoy.

But anyhow 3 day weekend coming up here. Hope you have a great weekend and not working. If you are then I’m sorry haha! Hopefully you get the time off another way.

  9. I am taking the plunge - will be, literally - by getting a pool installed in my backyard for the fam.  I am having an above-ground, oval pool installed, and can't wait to cool my butt down in it.  The kids I'm sure will love it, and will have quite a few years to enjoy it like I did when my folks got my brother and me a pool in my kid years.  I will also enjoy having friends/family over to enjoy visiting even more - yes "use" me, haha!  So looking forward to being on a raft on a hot, sunny day, drinking a cold one.  But a large part of my motivation again, is for others to have enjoyment.  Not an economical investment, and costly to install, but sort of a lifestyle investment - and responsibility - the way I look at it.

Anyhow, hoping for this to be as good as I can hope when it's all said and done.  Expecting this thing to be planted in our yard around the second week of June - weather permitting.  Can't wait!

  10. @kidblast

Yes, the problem with tech is "people-based" for sure.  It's actually amazing that things work the way they do and how fast it happened.

I'm a computer guy so I spend a good amount of time learning a bit about technology and such.  It's my job to function as a software/electrical engineer.  Not sure of your familiarity with the field I work in, but embedded engineering I like to call it - i.e., working on embedded systems (devices with software/programmable features and such).  I've worked for big companies that service the OEMs (Ford, GM, FCA, etc.) for quite a while now.  I don't work in the auto industry anymore as I moved into R&D in an industry that supports military/law enforcement (and even consumers to some extent).  Glad I got out of automotive!  As well, glad I made a shift in the industry I now support.  A lot more interesting than making vehicle modules for OEMs.  And, a lot less demanding.

So that's my background, I try to be sensible about how this "stuff" affects my life - because I know what life was like in its absence too, something previous generations have to grasp what it is they actually "have" (grateful perhaps to some extent...).  My kids get upset with a commercial on YT they can SKIP after 5s or so.  I remember having to be somewhere at some time (inflexible) to catch a show, etc. and you had to be subjected to ads - like it or not.  You wanted to watch, you're getting commercials too.  Whatever...  They came into the world with this stuff, they know nothing else.  Maybe bad analogy, but like an animal born and raised in captivity - i.e., they know no other way.  Important to teach them the way I look at it.  Some adults need education too, haha!  Hey, I'm no angel, nor do I want to tell others how to live to my standards.  I just hope I don't cause others pain and grief.  Not saying I take others' crap, but I won't go out picking fights - common flippin' sense again.

  11. I disagree that there are computer games that are multiplayer that I enjoy playing with friends. Actual friends that I can visit in person from time to time. I like it that I can even meet up with them in a game online when I can’t visit. Things like this I say take in the good with the bad. Internet is the same thing. Guns, cars… life etc. one chooses to be a troll and spread crap online. But I have never had it easier to pay my bills, manage my finances, learn about things that interest me, have a conversation here… good with the bad.

  12. I can’t rationalize spending over a grand for a HSC. Hard pass. The “regular” HSC that comes with Custom Shop Gibsons isn’t cheap either. All factored into the price of course. If you spend CS dollars though, I’m sure a case that costs $600 isn’t looked at as a bad deal.

  13. Reverb isn’t going to let anyone involved with a transaction via their site take your money and you never get anything. You just had to deal with someone that isn’t prompt on shipping and has kicked the can down the road as far as they could. But nonetheless, I’ve had great experiences with pretty much all the stuff I bought, except for the Music Zoo… those jokers shipped me a Gibson in a box that had no packing whatsoever and but had a GAPING hole when it arrived. I may refrain from doing business with that seller in the future. They even said the condition of this used guitar was excellent. Hardly… one pickup bushing came out of the body, dings galore, basically was a fair condition guitar. At least they sent me a few hundred bucks to make the deal right. Things like this can happen so be careful what entity you deal with on the Verb.

  14. Oh man, I’ve seen this kind of rant over and over on these forums. It’s like the people who post these kind of things were born yesterday. At least this wasn’t a GC thread, because they openly advertise that you are getting about 60% of the money that they sell your used guitar for. At least that was what they said a few years ago… I just sell my gear myself because it’s what I found works best for me. I don’t trade or sell to “dealers”. I also deal with more stuff to some extent to facilitate a sale, but is what it is. I bought it for X dollars somewhere - on me. I don’t want a guitar anymore - again, on me. Seems like this one is on the OP too…

  15. People keep paying for crap at these high prices, why wouldn’t these companies want to keep selling whatever crap we don’t need where they are? Seems like all companies are looking for hikes to find out where the real demand lies. Why cars, houses, everything costs what it does. Pure greed in a diseased society. Whatever “shortages” - or whatever - goes away; prices aren’t coming back down… get used to it

  16. It’s a 2023 that has that going on, time to try again. Used generally to me qualifies a previous owner or even attempted previous owner - bought guitar then turned it in. Why would GC say lightly played as some detail about the guitar? I seem to smell a rat… my thing is funny business with guitars, hard pass. Plenty of wires, wood, and paint out there to pick up. Good luck.

  17. @kidblast I said my piece here about prices and that’s all I care to go on about. I am living through this American dream like the rest of us are. There’s been a lot of money over the years pumped into the system and the effects of those driving the deficit spending and whatever else is causing the dollar to buy less is beyond my control. Don’t know about anyone else, but I’ll pass on buying a guitar at these prices. Even used is stupid today. Like you said, eggs to guitars - all stupid. Someone once told me I was crazy when you’d start paying over a dollar for a candy bar… they said not for a stupid piece of chocolate. Haha, it even costs a lot these days to buy crap that is literally crap for your body. Don’t get me wrong I think LPs and Strats are great, just that these days, my financial gears aren’t turning for an NGD to share here… just haven’t run into ANYTHING I can conceivably want to spend what you have to today for stuff that isn’t really a need for. I have 11 Gibsons and I think I had enough for a lifetime. Glad I got them the time I did… if I had to sell, I’d make back at least what I spent then - and probably some too… as they say when in Rome…

so just throwing this out there,,

    A new Standard 60s: $2,900

A new Fender Stratocaster Luxe: $2,600

Both to me seem high priced especially the Fender. I’m just ranting. A lot increasing across the board… I paid $80 for Science Diet bag for my dog that used to cost $50 a year ago. It’s just bad out there today. So much stuff inflated price tag, so in all fairness to these guitar makers, they are just following suit. It sucks when the increases aren’t for luxury items like guitars but rather for homes and cars. Average people finance for an inflated price tag and inflated rate.

  19. Gibson prices are always a ripoff. Buy used so you won’t have to take a bath once you decide to get rid of your guitar. It’s an abysmal market today regarding guitars - but you know, ymmv. I own 13 guitars and 11 are Gibsons - mostly used and bought years ago. No intention of letting them go, but when I do I’m going to gouge the price like everyone apparently likes to do in todays used market.
