I have never thought that I sounded good playing a PRS...they are certainly pretty guitars though! I kind of think of them like "Super Strats"; some folks sound great playing them, just not me. I can't really put my finger on the reason why. If I'm going to spend $1000 or more  on a guitar, it's gonna be a Gibson...in my opinion, Gibson makes, and has made, the most beautiful guitars ever produced! I do love the sound and versatility of my Strat, though!

Glad it's been kicking *** for you. Sometime its a pisser when a guitar come with a gig bag, but you can always buy a case for it if you feel you really need one. It wasn't to long ago that it was hard to get Gibson case by separately, now you can pick one from anywhere,.

  3. I don't see where anybody here is hating on any particular brand of guitar with the exception of the trolls that pass through here. I will say that most of us prefer a brand over another for whatever reason they have.  For myself, I prefer to stick to the iconic guitars I grew up listening to and lusting after.

I used to HATE a Telecaster, thought them ugly and twangy. Now I love them and own one. I still think they are ugly, but I love playing the hell out of mine.

  4. Man it does look look like granite, looks like it weighs a ton! That is just gorgeous!!!! I wouldn't care how it sounded or played, the look and craftsmanship alone is a selling point for me.

    Thanks for posting the closeups!!

So, further digging shows that it was originally trans-purple... so possibly a Classic? But then the serial is more in line with a Standard, as it’s 8 digits, where as all the classics seemed to run on the 5 digit system...

I think the colors of the Classic may have been more of the traditional bursts. I know you can't, but if you were able to lift the bridge pick up it would tell you the color. You  can also call Gibson Customer service with the serial number and they will be able to provide more info. 1-800-4Gibson.

I'm sorry about the thread hijack.

This is my 2006 CS Les Paul Special:

In comparison, I also have a 2006 CS Les Paul R8 with no checking at all. I bought both guitars around the same time in 2010, and they have been stored and used under the same environments / conditions under my care. I think the checking is cool, but I can see why someone don't like it. To me, it seems the Special has a thinner coat of lacquer, and I guess that makes sense as it isn't burst sprayed. I have no idea if that's the case, though...

Edit: By the way, I think Peter Honore is a fantastic guitarplayer, and as his goldtop was already starting to crack, I don't blame him for "finishing" the job...😎He can do whatever he likes to his guitars, and his Classic isn't nowhere near "destroyed".

I think your example looks awesome.! It's happened naturally and by doing so the outcome IMHO is more acceptable. If Peter was to come out and state that his checking happened natural, I would scratch my head, just doesn't look right.

If you are the original owner who filled out the Warranty Card, I would contact Gibson and tell them that what you have isn't what you believed you were purchasing.

I would have done that first to give them a chance to correct things.

They've always been a stand up company in my limited dealings with them.

Amen!! It bothers me that people come here with their first post to the forum to slam Gibson before going through the proper channels. I don't think the OP is doing this at all, but some trolls come  on here to stir the pot. I assume they are agents of PRS. However, the OP, stated he loved his guitar and  was pissed when he discovered it had a different pup than what was advertised. IMHO, that's just splitting hairs and pointless. No harm was done.  This whole post is pointless...

No this past weekend was the first time to visit JC. It’s actually a very nice city, the area is beautiful and close to NC , Virginia, Gatlinburg and the Smokey Mountains and trout fishing.  I won’t know a soul when I move there, but I’m sure I’ll meet some folks.

My bride is from Asheville, NC, just outside of JC. You picked a nice place to retire. Warren Haynes lives very close, if you're a fan like I am. JC is pretty laid back.

Not using movers. I’m only taking clothes, pictures and geet-tars and fly rods and reels. This is a family home that will not be sold and I have  a brother who lives 6 miles away and he will tend to it.  When I move into my new home I’m buying everything for the house new. I will decorate it accordingly. Lots of Gibson guitars!
I told my son 5 years ago in Gatlinburg if I live to retirement I’m moving to East Tennessee. It’s a beautiful place, folks are friendly and I’m going to do my best to convert Vol fans to Tide fans. The latter may not work out so well.

Have you ever been to  Laurels in Tenn. It's outside of Johnson City?

I don't know what kind of car you have, but if you 19 guitars and 4 amps I don't think making two trips is the solution.  Are you using movers for furniture and clothes and dishes and stuff?  Let them pack and move the guitars and amps, they are pros and if there is any damage it will be insured.

    ...and the insurance.
