Riviera mods

I am wondering if it's possible to remove the middle pick up on my Riviera and just use the bridge and neck and just play it as a two pick up Casino type guitar? I was just thinking about tinkering around with it and wanted to get your advice.

Thanks

John

First off, I have to agree that taking the pickup out would be UGLY!

Second, it is a semi-hollow guitar, not a full hollow body like a Casino, so if you are looking for the Casino sound, again I agree with the above advise; buy another guitar!

Third, With the mid pickup volume down, the Riviera is basically a standard 2 pickup guitar*. If you believe the mid pickup is affecting the sound even when off (which it could be), put a push-pull pot on its volume control to completely remove it from the circuit when not desired. This would actually be a pretty hip mod, adding to the guitar's vesatility. Even doing this, it is still possible for the pickups magnetic field to affect tone, but again, if you want a 2 pickup guitar that bad, buy one!

*I have not played a Riviera, but I believe all the volume comtrols may be completely independent vs standard Gibson interdependent controls where any volume control will turn the entire guitar off when turned all the way down. If you are looking to have the standard Gibson type controls with 2 pickups, you can easily accomplish this with re-wiring. You don't have to remove the mid pickup.

Here is a suggestion. Buy 3 push-pull pots. Wire the mid one to disconnect the mid pickup, the treble and rhythm pots can be wired to switch between independent and interdependent control. Whalah! Imagine the possibilities!

God bless, Spamonkis

Thanks for all the input guys. I don't really know exactly what I was thinking with removing the p/u. The hole would really be ridiculous. I was really just thinking out loud. I will probably just sell it and look for a Casino or a Sheraton to fill the need. Thanks again

if you're in the U.S., I have a mint condition Ebony '08 Korean Sheraton II i'd swap you even for it.....nothing wrong w/it, but i've recently bought a '62/50 Sheraton, and have another Hollowbody w/humbuckers...but no "big girl" w/P-90s yet.

let me know if you're interested & we can swap pics & info........
