Customizing a cheap Les Paul Jr

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've just discovered the Trans Blue color, from Epiphone :

I find it very interesting. (yes, I have strange tastes...)

Unhappily for me, it's a very rare color.

So, I was wondering if it was easy to customize an electric guitar,

especially a Les Paul Junior, in order to replace the pickup with a better one, or even a big single coil one.

By advance, thank you.

So, I was wondering if it was easy to customize an electric guitar,

What do you call easy and what kind of custom work are you talking about?

Anything that is put together can be taken apart. After that, anything can be adjusted and re-assembled.

Changing pickups, for some, is a major endeavor. Others do it on a weekly basis.

Some consider a fret leveling and setup with a change of electronics to be basic.

But don't forget....tools ain't cheep. (although there are some good deals if you look)

Consider also, many would think it silly to put $300 into a $100 guitar. Is this a one time shot or do you plan

on taking this up as a hobby? That would justify some of the tools.

Anyway, there are plenty of insights into the subject in the DIY:

Here are some additional members projects on customizing a Jr.

Brianh Jr. mod:

Some "stuff" I've done:

Tuner upgrades. (Juniors have the economy tuners)

New adjustable wrap around tailpiece. (imitation Bad ***....would not recommend):

New nuts: (only one of three ways to measure slots)

Hope others chime in,

Willy

What do you call easy

Well, just drilling and screwing.

and what kind of custom work are you talking about?

Only replacing the humbucker, which seems quite basic.

But don't forget....tools ain't cheep.

I hoped that a normal screwdriver and a normal drill would be enough.

Maybe I hoped too much... If that needs special tools, that would become too costly for me. :(

That would be indeed a one time shot.

Thank you very much for the links.

I will check that. :)

Drilling and screwing probably won't be enough for a pickup replacement; that requires soldering as well. I suggest you give it to your local guitar place if they do pickup replacements.

You don't have weird taste, I LOVE that blue as well [thumbup]

It's lighter than a standard Les Paul but still probably heavier than a fender.

Btw did you just buy this guitar?

Soldering is ok. I don't own the adequate tool, but that's ok.

Is it lighter than Epiphone SG guitars ?

My actual guitar is guite heavy (Oscar Schmidt OX10) and I'm looking for a light one.

I didn't buy it for the moment. I don't even know if they are available in France. :/

(without waiting 1 year, I mean...)

Maybe I should go to London during a week end...

I really like the Trans Blue color on that one..

I actually have one of these $100 Epi LP Junior Specials in sunburst, and it is not a bad guitar. Mine has a great neck, nice action, and the stock 'bucker sounds pretty good. IMO, the tuners are the weak link on this guitar, but having said that, they do seem to work pretty well.. Is this Epi LP Special worth more than a hundred bucks? Probably not - but for a hundred, this is a surprisingly nice guitar..

(I also have an Epi '57 Reissue LP Junior (also sunburst), which of course, is a lot nicer Junior - but I'm still keeping the cheaper one as well...)

Pics of both:

I haven't found any trans blue Les Paul Jr for the moment, neither in online stores nor in physical ones... :(

And the cheapest Les Paul Jr, neither in Ebony color nor in Vintage-Sunbrust color, I have found cost £100 without international shiping (about 120€ or $160)... :(
