One of our members started a post like this in the Lounge.

I thought I'd bring it over here and add some of the Martin specs for comparison.

Here's a few I've pulled off the net. I'm not sure how accurate they are. I thought my J185 was a short scale?

Re: Your J-185: be careful what you read on the internets- "Scale length, J-185 = 25 3/4" ? ? You remembered correctly. Pretty sure it's short-scale, 24.75".

From some recent 12-fret GAS'ing, there was some interest in a dream list of specs, which would be: short-scale, sloped-shoulder, 12-fret, rosewood (otherwise, I'd be all over that SoJo 12-fret), and... SLOT HEAD. The rosewood Larrivée SD-60 came close, but had the long scale. In comparing it's dimensions with a familiar standard, the J-45, an answer to the question of why do many 12-fret guitars look bulbous at the upper bout. It seems to be more noticeable with a non-burst guitar.

Larrivée SD-60 vs J-45 dimensions:

J-45

  •
  • Lwr bout +7/8” greater
  • Upr bout +1/4” greater
  • Waist + 3/8” greater

    Larry SD-60
  • Max bod depth +1/8” greater
  • curiously, Larrivée official site does not give body length.

J-45

lower bout 16 1/4”

uppr -------------- 11 5/8”

waist----------------10 7/8”

min bod depth 3 3/4”

max body depth 4 3/4”

body length------ 20 1/4”

overall length 40 1/2"

Some surprising info in that table, Dave. I really haven't even had a chance to digest it all yet, but the first thing that hit me was how similar the JB is to the Stage Deluxe... the SD might even be a bit broader, and deeper! And to think I was considering if I would've bonded better with my JB (walnut) if it were mahogany! Also looks like not only is the JB's soundhole sunk down a little deeper, but it's a smaller soundhole, as well. Very interesting.

This also may have some relevance to that Southern Jumbo 12-fret discussion... what do you think? Modoc_333 (Keith) did corroborate Nick's statement that it's the same size box as a standard J-45, but there are some other differences suggested here along with the 12th fret body join that could be considered as possibly also affecting the tone of the guitar.

Good info.

On the sound hole and 12th fret measurement are you measuring from 12th fret to circumference or center?

If the sound hole is placed closer to the bridge then the intersection of the X brace is also pushed down. It would likely necessitate the X to be widen to accommodate the bridge plate?
