pm74
Hey guys, I've tried both a 50s and 60s profile, but prefer the 60s and have decided to eventually purchase a LP Studio. Can you good folks please provide me with a list of models (years) to look out for. Either Hum bucker, mini hum bucker or p90 will suffice. Cheers. Rabs
Hi there (again :) (I just posted on your intro thread)... Well instantly id suggest a 60s tribute studio... I have one (I am also a big fan of 60s necks)... they really are great guitars for the money (and even regardless of money) if you don't care about the non shiny finish. However I will also say as we do on here, that the only real way to know is get out there and play as many as possible.. You will soon find out what you like and don't like.. Like say, ive played some guitars that say they have a 50s neck but don't feel that big to me, and others that have felt huge... Its cos Gibsons are hand finished so each one is slightly different.. so each is kind of unique in that way. The only other thing id say is if you don't like big necks, just avoid the 2015 line, just try one and you will know what im on about.. Past the 12th fret it just gets huge. And if you don't mind the 2014 12th inlay (which I thought was cool) the 2014 model year was pretty cool and I think some can still be found here and there (even though some of those have autotuning which you may or may not want). http://www.gak.co.uk/en/gibson-2014-les-paul-studio-pro-tobacco-burst-candy/89957?gclid=CK7vo5Xks8gCFavpwgod7T4P1Q http://www.dv247.com/guitars/gibson-les-paul-studio-pro-2014-6-string-electric-guitar-graphite-pearl--206059?gclid=CN6X56jks8gCFdQaGwod-FsJzw There are even some 2013s still around (another good year and no unwanted inlays) http://www.gak.co.uk/en/gibson-2013-les-paul-60s-tribute-min-etune-wine-red/77240?gclid=CMOsgrnks8gCFQUOwwodUZ4BWw Hope that helps a bit, and good luck on the hunt (feel free to ask anything else you want to know)
Rabs
Ohh yes and of course we have the new 2016 range which has just come out... which have gone back to the normal sized necks http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/gibson-les-paul-60s-tribute-2016-t-satin-honeyburst-dark-back?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&gclid=CIiI9s7os8gCFdXGGwod8PwNxw http://www.gak.co.uk/en/gibson-usa-2016-les-paul-60s-tribute-traditional-satin-ebony/122027?gclid=CPGm3-7os8gCFUUTwwodsZIPDw Then you have the new 2016 studios which have what they call a 59' profile neck, but ive never tried one so cant say how fat it is or not http://www.pmtonline.co.uk/gibson-les-paul-studio-faded-2016-t-satin-fireburst?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&gclid=CNDFopHps8gCFWX4wgodAxIBzQ
pm74
... and how do the 70s necks compare ?
Rabs
Hmmm, not sure actually I don't think ive tried one... (but im sure other people will chime in on that)... Theres also the 2013 Future Tribute which has an asymmetrical neck on it, which I have on my 2008 Standard and is very close to a 60s neck http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Future-Tribute.aspx

Rabs
Mmmm "asymmetric neck" ? I'm intrigued I've checked the link provided, but I'm curious to know what kind of shape that is exactly. Well its thicker at the bottom E side and slimmer on the bottom E side which is meant to make it more ergonomically fit your hand shape. Id say a Gibson is like no3
pm74
I suspect I'd actually prefer a symmetric neck. (Shortish fingers) haha especially the pinky.
btoth76
... and how do the 70s necks compare ? Hello! 70s necks are kind of a mix between the 50s and 60s style. They are thin at the nut, and get gradually thicker towards the heel. My personal favorite. The upper guitar (Studio 50s Tribute) has a thick neck. It's thickness is constant along the entire length. The one below, is a 1978 LP Recording, with a neck described above. Not the best illustration, though. Cheers... Bence
btoth76
Hello again! This is the official photo of 2011 Gibson L6S. It has exactly the same neck profile as my 1978 Recording. Even though, it's said to be a "60s Slim Taper". Cheers... Bence
capmaster
Guitars can play tricks on players. The same neck profile feels different at different neck angles and on bodies with different shapes, thicknesses, or masses. The L6-S guitars of mine have 60's slim taper necks, but they feel fatter than those on my a Les Paul guitars. Looks can play a role, too.
jaygl
The 2014 Studios have the 60's slim neck and sound great. Very resonant....the modern weight relief probably. Very vintagey and bitey sounding in a good way....
