jvi
hey folks, does any one think that going up from 12 -53 to 12 - 54 with a 25 g string would require nut work ? asking cause I have a set of martin lifespan sp and just noticed the difference - the bigger g an e ,small difference but... curious if they will sit in nut ok, on a new j
stein
No way to know for sure without testing them on the git. Would say, chances are slim to none it will require anything at all. Those are VERY small changes, practically the same thing. But basically, you have the cart before the horse. Don't do nut work in anticipation of string gauge, you try the strings and do nut work if it NEEDS it as a result of the string change.

duluthdan
I've had those Lifespans on my J-45 in the past, without issue.
OldCowboy
Shouldn't require any slot adjustment - at least it hasn't happened to me so far and I've done that kind of back and forth switching all my life (well all my playing life - 57 years or so)! fortyearspickn
Interesting question. This might explain why some of my strings, when tuning, seem to show fits and starts on the meter. Maybe I need to go back to putting a speck of graphite in the nut slot, so the needle moves smoothly in conjunction with the turning or the peg. Willie King
I switch back and forth between light gauges and never worry about the nut. Doesn't seem to matter on my guitars. You are not talking about a lot of difference in size.
