ZAPPA

Sgt. Pepper

I took one for the team and just clicked to rent in HD on Amazon Prime the Zappa documentary.  I will give my review in a few hours after its done. Time to make a breakfast sammich and  get a cup off coffee (and give my foot a push, just me and the pygmy over by the dental floss bush) and see if it lives up to the hype it got.

It was a really good doc. It was the best one I have seen about him. I learned some stuff too. It starts out at a concert Zappa gave just after the Communist Russians left what what then  Czechoslovakia after the Velvet Revolution.  It has great archival footage and man would I love to be able to go into the secret vault and listen to all those tapes and unreleased shows.

I'm gonna give it 5 out of 5 Dinah Moe Hums.

My breakfast sandwich was good too. Egg, swiss, and sausage on butter bread.

Here is the audio I found on YT of the very first Zappa concert I was at in Santa Cruz, CA. The audio is graded as B+. Sounds more like C- to me. I remember Zappa making the comment about Hydrogen and Stupidity at the start of the show. Two days later I saw him in Berkeley.

Here is my favorite Zappa concert https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyOPtVHIL9A
These FM broadcasts always represent a serious gamble in terms of sound quality. Some of them are stellar; some are very good, and most end up in the trash can. This recording of Zappa's great show falls into the "good" category. In general, the recording sounds muffled, with some very short breaks. I am writing a big essay about his concerts in the section https://studymoose.com/music-concert-report for an international company. It has a decent separation of various instruments but lacks dynamic range and treble.  If you don't already have The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life (the official release of Zappa from the same lineup and tour), do yourself a favor and start there. It's a nice addition to any Zappa fan's collection, but it's actually just not a very good introduction to the show.

I have a digital copy of Best Band You Never Heard. I was listening to Halloween '81 yesterday. It was Halloween show one.
