tom brown Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 While watching this five part series on les paul I began to think after watching him play that he is really the first shreddder......what do you all think? Part 1/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vomuse9tok Part 2/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ff1dmh1XA2w Part 3/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuXLUUJA0Rs Part 4/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFjfK4juRE Part 5/5 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdAP7Bs6UZ0
tom brown Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 P.S. His "shredding" is near the end of part five if you haven't seen it and don't want to watch the entire film.....
Maple Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Les Paul is an amazing player. i have the dvd chasing sound and it/he's great
callen3615 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Im not sure what to make of that....didnt sound like shred.
80LPC Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 If by shred we mean fast picking, there was a guy called Django...
mrktwn Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 If by shred we mean fast picking' date=' there was a guy called Django...[/quote']Yep, a hero of a certain Lester Polsfuss from Waukesha. Doesnt "sound" like shredding???.. Dude...
Duende Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 If by shred we mean fast picking' date=' there was a guy called Django...[/quote'] Django is still cleaner and faster than most people who call themselves shredders today! This is circa 1930's Also this may be towards his later years but Segovia too in the early 20th century was really pioneering Classical guitar technique (for most of the romantic period it had been pretty much forgotten) Matt
benjammin420 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Absolutely no disrespect intended towards Les, but I'd put Django up against anyone: metal, jazz, anything (with a handicapped left hand no less)
tom brown Posted April 22, 2009 Author Posted April 22, 2009 The concept is more what i was talking about, and remember neither of these guys have the amp and effects we have today...
Rocky4 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Absolutely no disrespect intended towards Les' date=' but I'd put Django up against anyone: metal, jazz, anything (with a handicapped left hand no less)[/quote'] I saw a documentary on Django where in France people put rubber bands around their folded pinky and ring fingers and play. The French let the gypsies take part because it's good for the festival, but when it's over, they treat them like dogs.

mrktwn Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 No' date=' Les played jazz. [/quote']Its jazz-like but not really jazz.
Rocky4 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Its jazz-like but not really jazz. Point well taken, I like my jazz without guitar
80LPC Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Its jazz-like but not really jazz. We can listen to Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery or Pat Martino for that.
