Understanding Tube Amps

Found this on the Fender Lounge this morning.

If you're curious, this is a great four-part video series on tube amps.

Some of you have recently purchased your first tube amp and this is a good video lecture on what's really happening when you use a tube amp.

Enjoy and learn. Knowledge is power.

Power comes from tube amps. Errr, what ever.

Check it out.

Now I'm more curious about my amp cus this guy said there is a pre-amp tube control and MAYBE a master volume control. In MY amp there is only bass mid treb, no gain, and a master volume.

This means my amp has no pre-tubes? o.o

Are they running wide open?

I'm not sure what amp you have but many amps with only one volume the volume control comes after the pre-amp tube (if your amp has a tube pre-amp).

So you probably have: Guitar -> amp input -> pre-amp tube -> Volume -> Output tube(s) -> speaker

You can use the guitar volume control to adjust the amount of distortion still as in the videos.

What amp did you buy Izzy? Wasn't it a Blackheart?

Yep, blackheart 3/5watt little giant ^^

I find I gotta have it at atleast 5 on the main knob to get distortion, i don't mess with my guitar knobs much.

hehe, i said knob, hehe

» 5W Single-Ended, Class A

» 4, 8 and 16 ohm Speaker Outs

» Preamp Tubes: 1 x 12AX7

» Power Tubes: 1 x EL84

» Solid State Rectifier

» Volume with 3 Band EQ

» Pentode (5W)/Triode (3W) Switch

» DC Power to filaments for super quiet operation

» 15 ply (18mm) thick-void free Plywood Construction

» 1W resistors in signal path, 2W & 5W resistors in power supply

Your amp has a tube pre-amp.

Looking at a schematic of your amp the signal input is as I posted earlier:

Guitar -> amp input -> pre-amp tube -> EQ, Volume -> Output tube(s) -> speaker

So to answer your original question "Are they (pre-amp tubes) running wide open?" the answer is yes they are.

You should already have this, but here is a pdf link of the manual of your amp with a schematic on page 11 incase you want to start learning how to read them.
